Just booked our February trip to Tofino!

So, me, my husband and our friends got a wild hair and just booked a trip to BC Feb 21-27, 2015! Sooo excited! We've never been (we're from eastern NC) and have a few questions.....

I'm sure February isn't at the top of everyone's list as the best time to visit but it was the time we had. Hopefully y'all will have some positive things to say about February in Tofino! We're hoping for some storm watching but also some hiking and kayaking (can we do that in February?). I've been reading and looking at maps but welcome your "must-do's". We are in our early 50's and very active.... Although we're excited about some great restaurants and spa time :) we are also very interested in time outdoors. I posted our travel itinerary below.

We get into Vancouver on the 20th ~ 1pm, Pick up our rental car, see some sights in the city, spend the night and then head to Tofino the next day. Have reservations for 4 nights at the Wickaninnish Inn and then will drive back to Vancouver, spend another afternoon/evening and fly out on the 27th.

Thanks so much for your help! Kathey

Hi

we went to Tofino in Feb 2014 hoping to do some storm watching; we got 3 days of sunshine and great sunsets.. some Pics https:/… so bring a good camera.

one thing that you may want to look into is doing some surfing depend on surf conditions..

then there is the Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet with lunch at the Black rock inn.

then there is the standard walk on the beach at Long Beach.

Most real tourist things like whale watching is closed for the season but there is enough to do that you will not be bored.

on the way you want to stop at Cathedral Grove Park before you get to Port Alberni minimum 30 min to see the big tree.

and, fish and chips (or seafood) at the Wild Side Grill.

and dress with full winter clothes so you can stay out longer.

One of my favourite trips to Tofino was in February. This was back in 2008. We had a mixture of rain and sun all throughout the trip. Tofino's one of those places where weather doesn't play as much of a factor as you'd imagine it to... if it's raining, go for a walk through the rainforest - it's absolutely magical. It's cloudy? Even better for wildly dramatic photo opportunities along the beach! When we went back in 2008, we did nothing but go for strolls through the rainforest and along the various beaches, and poked our heads into town to mix things up... and we were happy as clams to be there! Of course, with storm season, you get massive waves pelting into the shore, and there's a certain power to Tofino that you simply don't get by visiting in the summer months when the waves are tame. I think you're going to have an amazing time! Snow would be a rarity, though possible. Despite it being Canada, snow is a rarity along BC's coast in winter, at least at sea level. Heck, it could likely be colder in North Carolina!

Places to see along the way to Tofino.

http://www.oldcountrymarket.com/ The goats will not be on the roof in February though!

…gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/macmillan/ This is the one for the BIG trees. There are short walks on both sides of the highway.

urbanspoon.com/r/317/1538337/restaurant/Vanc… a great place for lunch on the way to Tofino. Port Alberni is the place you will want to top up the gas tank as well. No more gas stations until Tofino or Ucluelet.

…gov.bc.ca/bcparks/… This short hike can be an hour depending on which loop you want to take. The entrance is right on the highway.

You're getting great advice from everyone here.

Four nights in Tofino will ensure you have enough time to do everything on our coast. Another activity - more of a daytrip - you will want to consider is going to Hot Springs Cove, an all-natural geothermal hot springs in Maquinna Provincial Park north west of Tofino. You can get there and back by boat (an hour and a bit each way) OR boat there and seaplane back to Tofino!

Lots of good food here - fish and chips (among other things) at Wildside is terrific, fish tacos at Tacofino have become an attraction themselves (seriously), anything at SoBo is delicious, Spotted Bear is an intimate spot serving Chef Cam's creations, Shelter has become a Tofino classic with its good ambiance, surf theme and local photography, and the list goes on.

Staying at the Wickaninnish Inn should be delightful. Don't forget to book your spa time in advance and you may want to request your treatment in the Cedar Sanctuary, a standalone cabin as close to the ocean as it gets. Good times await.
