How long to spend in Vancouver?

As part of an extensive trip around Canada and USA, I am travelling from Calgary to Vancouver.

I've heard lots of good things about Vancouver, and that once you arrive you won't want to leave...!

So what I would like to know is, how long will I need to spend in Vancouver?

At the moment I'm thinking around 5 days. Is that a good length of time? Or could I see it in a couple of days?

I know this is a bit vague, and obviously there's no "set" length of time, but any advice would be appreciated.

I'm away 3 months in total.

Five days would give you a good overview of Vancouver. Can you give us a better idea of your interests and then we could give you some more information.

Thanks.

I am visiting with my boyfriend. He is 27, I am 28.

We like to see the "main attractions" of a city but also anything that's a little different.

For example, in Toronto, we want to see the CN Tower, Niagara Falls and the Sega Playdium (arcade)

We like stuff like arcades/video games, Science museums/centres, anything interactive, theme parks, anything "fun"!

Thanks for any tips

Stanley Park, don't miss the aquarium there

Science World

Anthropology Museum at University of BC

Suspension Bridge, North Vancouver

Lynn Canyon Park, ecology centre there

Grouse Mountain

If you like flowers, Van Dusen Gardens, Queen Elizabeth Park

Sun Yat Gardens in Chinatown ( I probably spelled this one incorrectly and will be corrected by someone)

Wandering through Chinatown in Vancouver proper or our second Chinatown in Richmond is interesting

There are excellent restaurants around

If you are looking for something a bit historical (not Britain historical, but historical for us), Burnaby Museum, Fort Langley (they have a really neat museum very close by too)

Some others will be able to come up with some more ideas. You can also go to Whistler and see where the alpine events, ski jumping etc will take place at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

I think five days is decent . . . I wouldn't go for less (unless the weather is miserable). You'll get the general gist of the city in that amount of time, although you could certainly stay longer!

Here are some ideas off the top of my head for science/different/interactive activities:

- If you're here in the summertime, you can go to the midway at the PNE, where there's all sorts of wild rides. I highly recommed the 50 year old wooden roller coaster . . . it may not look like much, but it's the scariest roller coaster I've ever been on (lots of air time!)

- Science World: http://www.scienceworld.ca/ Both sciencey and interactivey. Much of it is geared towards kids, but I find it fun and interesting, even though my childhood is but a speck in the distance

- The Planetarium, now corporately known as the HR MacMillan Space Centre: http://www.hrmacmillanspacecentre.com/

- The UBC Museum of Anthropology has a huge collection of aboriginal art: http://www.moa.ubc.ca/

- One thing you might want to look into is doing a movie tour. Vancouver has become known as "Hollywood North" due to all the movie and television production that's done here. I think there's a tour group called "Vancouver Movie Tours" although I have to admit I don't know much about them.

- Definitely look for any concerts or festivals going on whenever you're in town. The Georgia Strait is a great resource: http://www.straight.com/

- Going out for dim sum in one of the larger dim sum restaurants here is always a good time. I recommend Sun Sui Wah or Floata

I'll post more when I think of them . . . .

Playland is small, and a bit cheesy, but the wooden roller coaster is an absolute classic and a ride that is sought out by roller coaster aficionados from around the world. Definitely check that out:

It appears that the big video arcade at Metrotown is gone.

As for time, well... a life time isn't enough. ;> However, with three months of traveling, you will start to get tired and jaded and nothing will impress you anymore as all cities start to feel the same. Still, sounds like a great trip. Five days just to see Vancouver would work, and add another couple of days for Whistler.
