Beer & Liquor Stores

Hi, business trip to Vancouver on Tuesday. Unexpected- sprung on me yesterday afternoon.

Staying @ Park Inn & Suites Broadway (was a Ramada not too long ago, per my quick look-up on the internet) & will be there for at least a week, possibly 2 or 3.

1. Buying liquor/ beer in BC. What's the scoop- government-run stores or private?

2. Do you buy beer & liquor at same store or are they separate?

3. Are stores open late in evening or do they close early? Sunday open?

4. Anyone know if there is somewhere to buy (esp. beer) within walking distance of my hotel- W Broadway, between Oak & Cambie, across from Vancouver General Hospital.

Private liquor stores are traditionaly 10% to 20% higher than Gov't stores, though they occasionally have products on sale.

Gov't stores have a much larger selection, especially if you can find one of their Signature Stores.

If you can get to the gov't store on Cambie, near 39th, it is the largest volume liquor store in the world. Fantastic selection.

Also the BCLS (gov't) don't generally have chilled products avail, but the private stores will.

Along with the other locations mentioned above, there is a BCLS on Cambie just below Broadway, which is not too far from your hotel. You may want to end up down that way anyhow as there is an Overwaitea supermarket (or is it a Save on Foods? -- same company anyhow) and a Whole Foods nearby.

Both BC Liquor Stores run by the government and privately-owned beer and wine stores are available.

Generally, hard liquor is bought at the government stores, while wine & beer are bought at beer & wine stores or at govt stores.

Private beer & wine stores have longer hours and are open on Sundays. The only govt liquor store open on sundays and holidays (11am-6pm) is located on Cambie Street off 39th Avenue. It is open from 9:30-11pm on Monday to Saturday.

There is a beer & wine store right by your hotel.
