Things to do and good hotels to stay in Vancouver?

We are planning to visit Vancouver and then drive down to Calgary - we plan to visit Jasper and Banff on our way to Calgary. Any recommendations on sight seeing and places to stay in Vancouver? We will be having a car and plan to spend a day or perhaps a little more than a day, in Vancouver. Thanks!

In one and a bit days in Vancouver you will have to pick and choose from these highlights:

Granville Island and False Creek

Stanley Park, including the Aquarium

Gastown - for a self guided walking tour: www.gastown.org --> history --> take a self guided walking tour. Otherwise this historic birthplace of Vancouver will just be brick and stone to you.

4 Self Guided walks - vancouver.ca/commsvcs/…

Chinatown

Museum of Anthropology at UBC

Robson Street

Bill Reid Gallery at 639 Hornby St.

Vancouver Art Gallery with its great Gallery Restaurant

Grouse Mountain

Lynn Canyon Susp Bridge (free) or Capilano Susp Bridge ($$$)

Maritime Museum - at Kitsilano Point

Van Dusen Gardens

Queen Elizabeth Park (if still open - the Bloedel Conservatory)

Re accommodation: have you had a chance to research Vancouver Hotels on the list to the left side of this forum? Perhaps you could narrow things down, let us know what kind of accomm you are looking for and we can fine tune your preliminary choices.

Vancouver is totally walkable.

Thanks for the useful information!

Regarding accommodation, I guess my concern is to find a hotel in a safe area. We are not going to be in the hotel except to crash at night- so we don't need any frills attached. A basic clean budget friendly hotel is what we are looking for- I am not able to make up my mind regarding which areas are safe and which aren't. The reviews sometimes are mixed and so any information on this will be useful.

Thank you.

Okay, all of Vancouver is safe, at least as safe as any city. The part of town that is uncomfortable is the Downtown East Side, on Hastings between Abbott and Gore. A number of unfortunate folk there, who are busy living their lives and don't bother with tourists. Having said that, it's always a good idea to keep your stuff handy and to be aware of what's going on around you. You will have a car and the going advice is don't leave ANYTHING - quarters, sunglasses on up - in sight in the car cabin. Addicts throughout the city are inclined to smash and grab if it's really easy to do so.

Hotels. You might consider looking at The Blue Horizon on Robson St (shopping). It's pretty much central to Stanley Park, Granville Island and Chinatown/Gastown. It's handy if you want to take the Seabus over to Grouse Mtn, Cap Suspension Bridge or Lynn Canyon Park.

You also might consider looking at the Hampton Inn and Suites on the far east end of Robson. Not as centrally located but a nice hotel. (Remember that the whole of the downtown area is about 1.5 sq km.)

Another for basic, clean budget friendly in the YWCA Hotel, which is a hotel not a women's hostel. It is on Beatty St. & Georgia. It gets good reviews on TA and is very popular, books up quickly.

Is Ramada Inn in Granville safe too?

Ramada is safe, but Granville entertainment district might be noisy and the hotel itself not the prettiest.

Want somewhere quiet and relaxing? Stay at Robson Suites or if you are looking to be close to where the Ramada is on Granville, stay at the Best Western Downtown instead. You wont be right in all the noise that way.
