Amtrak Cascades from Vancouver to Seattle

We'll visit Vancouver for 3 days in last week of August:

- Granville (Tue)

- Victoria (Wed)

- Stanley Park (Thur).

Then we'll visit Seattle for 2 days and take overnight (11pm) flight back.

1. To enjoy the scenic view, shall we take Thursday afternoon train (5:45pm) or Friday morning train (6:40am)?

2. How long in advance shall we be in train station? We're US citizen that needs to clear custom.

3. Except for the AAA 10% discount, any other deals?

Thanks,

Vancouver, Canada

there are occassionally promos on that route but they would be listed on Amtrak site as well as other discounts. The farther ahead you buy the tix the less they are. Even if you took the late train you'd be mostly in daylight but the morning train is very scenic and its easier to find your way into downtown seattle arriving in the morning. If you don't have lots of luggage you can bring them onboard vs checking them in and that will save you time.

Thank you for your advice. I guess 5:40am (1hr before departure) to be in the station is pretty difficult, same as late night arrival of Seattle. Really bad system scheduling.

the train schedule is coordinated to meet up with Coast Starlight and also offer a continous trip from Seattle to Eugene Oregon, hence the early start.

Based on traveling issues I would pick the afternoon train, this way you can check into your hotel and drop off your bags, etc when you arrive in Seattle. If you get there in the morning this may be before your checkin time. Plus no one wants to get up that early on vacation, it ruins the night before and makes you tired the next day.

That time in August it will still be light out fairly late and you should be able to enjoy looking out the window for most of the trip. I would suspect they have taxis waiting at the other end to drive you to your hotel.

The senior (62+) discount is 15% rather than the AAA 10%. And yes, buying early is the best way to get the lowest fare. An full fare one way ticket bought a couple of months ago for $35 is now $50.
