anyone suggest a simple away from it all week within 250 mil

We are visiting our son in Vancouver in July and want to take a week out to be in a peaceful natural environment - log cabin by water sort of thing and cheap - we haven't a clue where to go to avoid the tourist routes. Can you help?

I've always wanted to try that Pitt Lake destination. We had a poster on here a year or two ago who was looking for something like that. I suggested the Pitt Lake destination, and they looked into it and went for it. They reported back that is was fantastic, just what they were looking for. Keep in mind that it is a VERY remote destination. Boat access only, no electricity (everything is propane powered). If you need something a little less remote, then try Manning Park Lodge or Lac LaJeune.

Here is a distance calculator to help you remain within your 250 mile radius as I am sure you will get a few suggestions on your thread.

…gov.bc.ca/popular-topics/…calculator.asp

I will suggest a trip over to the Sunshine Coast - You do not mention your budget but July in the lower mainland area for a week is not going to be very cheap. Try this site to get some ideas as to pricing and cabins/cottages rentals here on the Coast.

http://www.bigpacific.com/

The Sunshine Coast is about 90 minutes from downtown Vancouver - and includes a short - very scenic 40 minute ferry trip from Horseshoe Bay to the town of Gibsons Landing - about 50 miles in distance.

Here is the BC Ferries website for the schedule. (this is the winter schedule - it will change in the spring to include the summer departures).

bcferries.com/schedules/…vasc-current.html

The Sunshine Coast is sleepy in the winter - but can be busy with tourists in the summer. The further north you travel along the coast the slower the pace. How far from tourists and what level of seclusion would you like to experience?

For something a little different:

We have travelled to Powell Lake in the summer (upper Sunshine Coast) to rent a house boat and there are numerous float cabins on the lake as well. Huge lake - so secluded and virtually no one around and the fishing is great! Too secluded for some though - a float cabin is only accessible by boat. Here is an example of a few float cabins: http://www.floatcabins.com/

Also - North of Powell River accessible by water taxi off of the marina in Lund there is a beautiful little spot called Savory Island. White sand beaches, warm waters, relaxed pace - wonderful retreat. http://web.me.com/savary9/Savary/WELCOME.html

Both of these “something different” locations will take you time to reach - Powell River and Savory Island areas will involve another ferry trip (about an hour and 20 min) but boasts one of the most scenic drives in BC.

Anyway - Good luck with your search and have a great trip.

OH, see now my fantasy meter has gone off and I'm thinking about all sorts of places that are on MY get away list.

Here's somewhere we went last Easter. The owner's are friends of mine. There really is nothing at all to do, but at the time, that was PERFECT for us.

We all really enjoyed it, even though the weather was pretty poor last Easter. We played on the beach, went for a walk, read books and did a big jigsaw puzzle.

Somewhere we all want to go but haven't managed to organize the time yet is Savary Island, another remote destination off Powell River. It would be a bit of a journey to get there, but I've heard stunning things about it.

You could consider taking the ferry to Galiano Island. It is a serene place, without much traffic, country roads, quite a few choices of accommodation, Sturdies Bay village where the ferry comes in.

I have stayed at The Driftwood, a set of cottages overlooking the water. It was retreat like with deer browsing the grass at any time. You could pack your groceries with you, or get them in Sturdies Bay. The following link lists Galiano accommodations, including the Driftwood Village.

Head into the interior of BC. It`s off the beaten path and far enough from the tourists that hopefully you`ll get a good deal despite being here in July.

A couple of years ago I went to the Hills Health Ranch just outside of 100 Mile House. It was great R&R and plenty of activities right in the middle of nature.

Bowron Lakes provincial park is farther north just off the highway from Quesnel. Some of BC`s most spectacular scenery and a great place to canoe or kayak. While there, check out BC`s historic town Barkerville.

Oh, yes, I like Galiano. And we've done winter ski trips to the Hills. The place is a bit outdated, but also not too expensive. So many places, so little time (and money!!)

Galiano Island is perfect for what you are looking for. I see someone has recommended the Driftwoodvillage. Excellent choice for your getaway. Prices are very reasonable and it is a great place for a personal retreat. Nice little cottages.
