You can take a Pacific Coach Lines bus over to Victoria, seeing Butchart Gardens on the way. Vancouver Island is about 2/3 the size of England so it isn't a hit the highlights in a day kind of trip.

thank you - are there any other sights on Vancouver island that are not too far from Vancouver itself that anyone can recommend - we realise its a huge palce but it would be good to go9 to a few places just so we can say we saw them and went there - a bit like going to see Buck palce and tower of London in London or the opera house in Sydney in Oz - thats kind of thing - any other ideas please?

Hi Shimmer ~

By coach or car and ferry from Vancouver to Victoria will take you about 4 hours one way or from Vancouver to Nanaimo will take about 3.5 hours o/w. By seaplane it will take 35 minutes from Vancouver harbour to Victoria harbour.

Pacific Coach has an "add on" of a one way seaplane and the other way coach. That might be worth looking at.

For getting outside Victoria, you would need a car. One main "site" would be Port Renfrew and the scenery along the way - a 2-2.5 hour drive one way. Another main "site" would be the Parksville/Qualicum Beach area, a 2.5 hour drive from Victoria. Another "main site" would be the Tofino area, a further 3 hour drive from Parksville.

There is good public transit within Victoria. You can see Victoria in one long day or better one overnight. There is a shuttle service by Grayline West from downtown Victoria to Butchart Gardens between May and September. It would be wise to allow a car rental and 3 nights to see the Tofino area.

With your time frame I would allow one overnight and stick with Victoria because you are really checking on doing something similar to London - Exeter - Liverpool and back to London. I'm not on my home computer right now and will post further later on.

In my humble opinion the Royal BC Museum in Victoria is a must see.

Another vote for the Royal BC Museum.

Weather permitting, bikes are a fun way to see Victoria.

You would not need a car in either Vancouver or Victoria as they are both easily walkable. Vancouver has particularly good transit and getting to the North Vancouver attractions is quite straightforward. Getting to Victoria and back is convenient with www.pacificcoach.com One way takes 4 hours. You board the bus at Pacific Central Station with your luggage underneath for the duration, it drives you right onto the ferry, you go up on deck for the voyage, then back down to the car deck for the bus and off to downtown Victoria.
