ferry reservations

Just trying to make reservations for easter weekend and most sailings are full as far as reservations go. Do they open up more spaces closer to the date?

Does anyone know?

thanks

No!

The only choice you have is to line up early and take your chances.

The Good News is that only about 60% of ferry space is reserved the rest is First Come First Served.

The Bad News is that you'll be lining up with thousands and thousands of other people with exactly the same goal as you.

Note that in terms of ferry traffic the weekend starts Wednesday night with increasingly heavy loads.

No they don't. You will have to get in the general first-come-first-served lineup and wait for your turn to get on the next available ferry. Sometimes it's a 1 ferry wait, sometimes 2 or 3, depending on when you are travelling. Saturday and Sunday will be better for getting on.

Easter is typically not that bad. With some people having Easter Monday off and others not having it off the traffic gets spread out over the Sunday and Monday

Are you only going as far as Nanaimo? (I notice that you have posted in the Nanaimo forum as well.) The #257 express runs from downtown Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay and then you could go as a foot passenger (although on very busy holiday weekends it sometimes becomes so hectic that only so many foot passengers are allowed on particular sailings). Is that an option?

If you are going via Horseshoe Bay, it is a nightmare on Easter Weekend. They have lineups way down the Upper Levels Highway. Last year the lineup was almost to the Cypress Mountain turnoff. You would be better off going as a foot passenger than trying to take a car that weekend. Coming home it is a bit easier because not everyone has the Monday off as a holiday.
