Best part of Vancouver with kids?

Help - I am ovewhelmed by the differnt parts of Vancouver! Our family (2 young boys, 1 baby, hubby and I) will be in town from July 31 - Aug 3 just before flying back to Montreal. BEST PLACE TO STAY FOR US? We will have a rental car and will be coming back from Vancouver Island, horse ranch in Cariboo, Whistler, etc.

Would also appreciate hotel recomendations.

Thanks!

I'd be inclined to go towards Stanley Park, or perhaps the Granville Island area. Not sure on your budget, but the Bayshore is a great location for families if you can afford it.

In order to get better, more specific recommendations for your family, you might want to give a bit more info on the type of hotel you like, your budget and any other preferences :-)

Hello,

If your family is the musuem/science-type people, perhaps you could check out Science World.

As mentioned above, if your family is the outdoorsy people, definitely check out Stanley Park. The Westin Bayshore is conveniently located near Stanley Park, has a fantastic indoor/outdoor pool, and stunning marina views from some rooms. I checked July 31st to August 3rd for you and it's $284/night not including taxes so I'm not sure if that fits your budget.

Also, Victoria is a great place to visit for a day trip.

Enjoy Vancouver!

Anywhere close to English Bay would suit.

With little kids like yours I'd be leery of a day trip to Victoria unless flying over/back-any ground transport option means hours stuck inside a vehicle-the Ferry is fun Yes but scenery doesn't mean much to children not for long anyway.

First of all Aug 1 is BC Day and makes a long weekend here. The ferries to VI would be on BUSY setting. With 3 days, you would do well in Vancouver.

You might like a place that has a kitchenette and a separate bedroom for getting the kids asleep and enjoying the evening yourselves. And you would without doubt want a place in either downtown or the West End. Have a look at:

Times Square Suites (Robson and Denman)

The Landis Hotel and Suites (Hornby and Davie)

Robson Suites (Bidwell and Alberni - near Denman and Georgia)

Sunset Inn & Suites (thurlow and Burnaby)

These are all reviewed here on TA. Some of them may be under the Property Type of Specialty Lodging.

The following website is now a bit out of date. I guess the kids in the family who set it up are not older. But it still gives great suggestions:

www.findfamilyfun.com

You can get around to all the attractions either by walking or public transit.

Your family might be interested in:

The harbour ferries on False Creek which offer a harbour "tour" - which is really staying on the boat for more than one leg. If you decide to do this, I would advise you to either email or phone them to ask about a family price. I believe they are open to that, but it is the long weekend in high season, so it's hard to say.

Granville Island has a Kids Only Market and a splash park just along the street.

Kits Point near the Planetarium and Maritime Museum has kite fliers all day every day. They are a site to see as some of their kites are complex.

Science World as mentioned is at Main Station on the skytrain line.

Grouse Mountain has some grizzlies in captivity and some elusive wolves. There is a great lumberjack show in the summer. The gondola to get up there is fairly expensive.

Hope this helps.

I'd suggest you find a place in English Bay or Kitsilano. They are both close to beaches, parks, and restaurants and they are less expensive that other areas downtown. Google-map them for location details.

Also, I'd recommend that you rent a furnished apartment under short-term rentals on Craigslist or Airbnb. Hotels could be pretty costly during the time of your stay.

Have fun :)

I would like to post another point of view for the websites mentioned in #6.

Those website short term rentals are great if you live here and you can see the place before you put down any money. Craigslist is an unmonitored site, anyone can post anything. Not sure about airbnb. Such listings have caused some heartache for those from afar.

Any downtown location would be a good location. From there I would choose a suite hotel. There are several in downtown Vancouver - check out the Tripadvisor reviews

Ok. No offense but that is waaay too much to do and way too scattered locations to do all that. The Caribou, Whistler and the Island all in 5 days of a long weekend and with kids?

Slow it down, pick one of those things and enjoy a vacation instead of taking part in The Amazing Race and seeing nothing really.

Just my 2 cents.

well_marbled.. I think the OP means they will have already done Whistler, VI and the Caroboo ranch..so looking to stay in Vancouver for the long weekend.

Second the suite hotel in West End or English Bay.. have a look at the Sylvia.. it's a bit shopworn but the location can't be beat for a family and I beleive they also have family suites
