Vancoveur to Banff (or Jasper) and Ice fields

My son and I are visiting Western Canada. We would like to see Jasper or Banff and the ice fields. Also, we would like to take a boat ride or cruise out of Vancouver.

Can you recommend a route and carrier(s). We would like to take a train to Jasper or Banff and the ice fields. If its best to rent a car for the day that's fine.

We need to complete the trip in around 7 days and do not want the most expensive options, but not the least also because I want this to be a great experience for him.

Thank you

Hi muzzles, and welcome to TA.

When are you planning to come? Will you be renting a car? Where are you planning to arrive to and depart from? What are your interests, what do you like to do: hike? canoe? museums? shopping? sightseeing?

Usually for a trip to the Rockies, the recommendation is for 7-8 days in the Banff, Lake Louise, Icefields Parkway, Jasper area.

The distance between Banff and Vancouver is 900 km or so and that is probably best done over 2 days. If you are planning to return to Calgary, you would need another two days to get back there.

If you click on the link following you will be able to read an article about driving from Calgary to Vancouver and the routes that are possible:

To get to Vancouver, you could rent a car, take VIA Rail or the luxury train the Rocky Mountaineer. However, with only 7 days, I would suggest you visit the Rockies only this time and save Vancouver for another visit. You could look into taking a Brewster tour in the Rockies.

As a new poster on TA, I would suggest you look at the British Columbia forum and the Canadian Rockies Forum. Perhaps even the Alberta Forum. Each and every forum will have sections of useful, helpful information. To the left sidebar you will find "Things to Do" and to the top right, you will find "Top Questions." Also, it would be very helpful for you if you opened the questions, listed on these forms' main topic listings page, that others are asking and reading the advice and suggestions that are being given others. Every little bit helps you sort what you would like to do.

The icefields are 1 hour south of Jasper and 3 hours north of Banff. You need to rent a car for the 7 days. Fly into Calgary then 3 days each in Banff and Jasper then fly home from either Calgary or Edmonton. The drive between Banff and Jasper is 4 hours but will usually take the whole day since there is a lot to see in between including the icefields. The icefields will take 1 hour if you don't have to wait in line.
