Vanouver or Vancouver Island

Hi, my Husband and I are visiting Vancouver at the end of August and looking for advice on whether to stay in Vancouver itself or the Island, we would also like to go to whistler for a few days. We would be looking for 4-5* hotels in the centre close to restaurants, bars places of interest, thank you and look forward to hearing from you.

Vancouver Island is a completely different destination - would you like to stay in London or the Isle of Wight? Ok, they aren't quite that far apart, but you get the idea.

To really see Vancouver Island, I recommend 10 days to two weeks, with time in Victoria, in the Pacific Rim at Tofino, and in the north island around Port McNeil. Places like Campbell River, the Comox Valley and Mount Washington, Parksville and the many Gulf Islands are also popular destinations, so spending time on Vancouver Island is a big adventure onto itself.

Travel between Vancouver and southern Vancouver Island (near the capital city of Victoria) takes about 4 hrs by road and ferry, or about 45 minutes to fly harbour to harbour..

If you would like to visit Whistler, then you need to be in Vancouver.

If you are after 4-5* hotels, then you would best stay in Victoria area if you ventured to the Island. There are definitely some 4-5* hotels elsewhere on the island (Tofino and some gorgeous fishing lodges in Campbell River area), but they aren't around lots of shopping and bars.

How long are you staying????

You have not said how long your trip is for which will affect how long you spend in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island.

Higher end hotels on the Island are in Victoria and in Tofino. In Vancouver, you have quite a variety downtown which is where you want to be. Hotel Georgia, Four Seasons, Hermitage, Fairmont Pacific Rim would be your best bets.

As pointed out the information you gave is a little vague. I am feeling that perhaps you may be unaware of just how big Vancouver Island is and how much time it takes to get to and from Vancouver city to the island. The island is 1/4 the size of England, England not the U.K. Getting to the capital city of Victoria on Vancouver Island takes about the same amount of time from Dover to Calais. It is of course possible to do parts of Vancouver Island ( depending on your interests ) Vancouver and Whistler but knowing how much time you have is essential in giving good advice.

I would base yourself in Vancouver downtown. Lots to see and do. A drive up to Whistler is easy, but you can also take a the train. If you have 2 days to spare, then take the ferry over to Vancouver Island and visit Victoria.

Just on the size of Vancouver Island, it takes roughly 7 hours to drive from Victoria at the southern end to Port Hardy at the northern end, and 3 hour to drive east/west at the mid-point. As has been said, it's about 4 hours from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria by bus or car and ferry. The ferry trip, itself, is 90 minutes (and quite lovely).

As everyone else has said: big distances and very different. Both will be lovely in August ( you picked the right month!). Vancouver has city life, oceans, beaches ( Spanish banks, Jerico,( large and wild) Deep Cove ( small village), music evenings ( free on the North Shore), forests and parks and suspension bridges ( Capilano if you want to spend $ and Lynn Canyon if you want free:).

Vancouver Island is a 1.5 hour ferry ride($$), quaint Victoria and rugged coastline all needing lots of time and $$ to travel. If you are short on time and $$ you will be very happy staying in Vancouver but you need to experience one of our islands so hop a cheap walk-on ferry to Bowen Island for the day! Just take a bus to Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver and enjoy the jaw dropping scenery!
