Fun things near Pan Pacific

I am staying at the Pan Pacific next Sat-Tues and need some recommendations for things to do, places to see, and restaurants/bars. We are 28 & 32. Anything from cheap to expensive, wine bars to dive bars. Enjoy all types of food, especially seafood and Japanese.

Also, what is the primary mode of transportation? Is it like NYC with taxis and a subway? Are there many things within walking distance (ie 1 mile?)

Thank you!

Walk most places. You can rent a speed boat at the Marina ten minutes to the west. Take a picnic lunch and explore Vancouver by water.

Gastown is a short easy walk away with great restaurants and bars. Others will chime in with names.

To the west, you are within walking distance of Stanley Park or even better walk to the entrance of Stanley Park and rent bikes to ride around the seawall.

Short walk to Seabus terminal; take the seabus to North Vancouver and then a bus or taxi to any of: Grouse Mountain, Lynn Canyon, Capilano Suspension bridge or go kayaking in Deep Cove.

How much fun are you looking for? Fly dine drive helicopter package will scoot you to the to the top of grouse mountain....5 star dining and then a limousine back to your car or hotel. I did it and would recommend it. Not a budget excursion.

The entire downtown core is 1 mile by 1.5 miles, you can walk anywhere downtown.

When I think of "fun" and "close to Pan Pacific" - I think of Gastown by evening. Gastown's not necessarily a super fun place by day, although Revolver and Nelson the Seagull are cool coffee bars to hang out in... but at night it has a vibrant cocktail scene. Places like the Diamond Bar, The Clough Club, Salt Tasting Room, The Revel Room, L'Abbatoir, The Cork & Fin, The Alibi Room, Guilt & Co, Six Acres, The Irish Heather, Pourhouse, etc. You'll have plenty of places to explore.

Even Chinatown, which is not necessarily "fun", has some great cocktail bars and restaurants opening up - The Keefer Bar, Bao Bei, Union Bar, and East of Main, are fun at night.

There are some complete utter dives in/around Gastown & Chinatown - Pub 340, Pat's Pub, Funky Winkerbean's, and the Cambie are holes which will give you a taste of pre-gentrified Gastown life.

Sam's recommendation for Kitanoya Guu with Otokomae (literally steps from your hotel, just around the corner on Water Street) is tons of fun for Japanese.

If you get tired of the downtown scene, I can recommend taking the Skytrain (which acts like a subway downtown) east several stops to Broadway Station and get off and explore Commercial Drive by evening. It's more of an eccentric/bohemian - formerly Vancouver's Little Italy. There's a lot of small restaurants and pubs with live music, poetry slams. Some quirky establishments like the Storm Crow Tavern (a nerd bar that hilariously celebrates its love for Dungeons & Dragons and sci fi), or the Libra Room (for live jazz)... or St Augustine's for 40 taps of craft beer, BierCraft (for a binder's worth of Belgian beer), or Falconetti's (from Diners Drive-Thru & Dive's) for live music/home made sausages. It's a totally different scene than downtown.

Main Street (between E 7th and E 28th) is fun too - I'd just hop in a cab. Places like Cascade Room, Narrow Lounge, Portland Craft, the Whip Cafe, or the Rumpus Room are fun places if you're seeking evening eats, cocktails, beer, and fun atmospheres. Great shopping in this area too if you come by during the day. And on some evenings, The Wallflower Diner has Dr Sketchy's Anti Art School where it's life drawing class at the bar, and the models are dressed into character - Star Wars, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.

For Japanese food, other fun places will be further west of you along Robson Street and along Denman Street. Look up Hapa Izakaya and Kingyo.

The night market in Richmond (suburb of Vancouver) is still running.
