Summer Tour of British Columbia

Hi to everyone and thanks in advance to anyone who is willing to help us.

We are planning a holiday of about 12 days in August to Vancouver and British Columbia and we need suggestions about places and things to do outside the city limits

We'd like to split our time in 5 days to get to know the city and 6 or 7 days to getting around with a rented car.

We are 5 persons 4 mature middle aged and a teenager coming from Italy.

Our Interest are Nature Sight Seeing, Arts, Foods & Wine, Shopping and Golf

By now we are tending to spend our time in Victoria, Tofino and Whistler; Is there anythings we are missing?

Do you have a particular route to suggest us?

Any good golf club with accommodations?

You have set aside 5 days for Vancouver which could include an overnight to Whistler. In the remaining week, I would focus on Vancouver Island, specifically Victoria (2 nights) oing up island to Tofino (3 nights) and a couple of days going further up island and then taking a ferry to Powell River and coming down the Sunshine Coast back to Vancouver.

In one week, I do not think you have enough time to see other parts fo the province unless you are intent on a rushed trip without time to smell the roses.

Given your interests and your already identified destinations, I would agree with wgr's itinerary, a very good one for your time frame. It would provide sightseeing, nature and wine. There will be golf!

Arts and Culture: the Royal BC Museum will very likely interest you for up to 2 hours.

Wine tasting can be found in the Cobble Hill/Cowichan Valley region just 20 min north of Victoria.

Whistler is a world-class golf destination with some great courses and amazing scenery.

And Vancouver Island has some great golf as well.

This might be an interesting place for you to stay if you go to Victoria. It's a beautiful hotel with 2 great golf courses. Bear Mountain...

For Vancouver Island golf resorts, consider Crown Isle in Courtenay, which has accommodations on its golf course in a town with some very good restaurants. It's also not far from the ferry to Powell River.

In Qualicum Beach, en route from Tofino to the ferry, Qualicum Memorial is a pleasant course with low prices. You could stay at The Sand Pebbles on the water and find some decent restaurants through TA.

At Whistler, you can stay and play at the Chateau Whistler but prices are likely to be very high. Same likely to be true in Victoria and area at the height of the tourist season.

I would not recommend going to Vancouver Island. Would do days in Vancouver (4 days) , Whistler (3 days ) and Kelowna-Pentiction (4 days) This is our wine region, with lots of great places to dine, great golf and drink some good wine.

Going to the Island in the summer can be problematic (read ferry traffic-you will need to reserve) and getting to Tofino will be a whole day affair, then getting back is another day so now you are down to 10 days.

Driving to the Interior is a 4.5 to 5.0 hr drive. You could access from Whistler via Cache Creek into Kamloops then down Lake Okanagan into Kelolwna.

Just my thoughts

Many thanks to everyone your hints are very well appreciated since I never went in this area....

We are quite flexible with our time and maybe 5 days in Vancouver are too much but we'd like to get to know the city really well and we can also expand our vacation till 15 days in total if there are really nice things to do in the other 10 days (I 'm sure it will be a vacation to remember)....

Please keep coming your great informations

With 14 nights, you could do a much different trip. You could visit Vancouver and the Rockies. You could consider a one way car rental, with accompanying one way drop fee, from Vancouver to Calgary and fly out of Calgary. Something like this:

4 nights Vancouver

2 nights on the way across the 850 km to the Rockies, perhaps Kelowna.

4 nights Banff, day trip to Lake Louise

3 nights Jasper

1 final night in Banff to position yourself for the 2 hour drive to Calgary airport.

August would give you much to do and see here. The first Monday in September creates our Labour Day long weekend which is very busy, advanced reservations for accommodations in Banff and Jasper would be a must. School goes back on the day after Labour Day.

Trip Reports by previous visitors can be seen here:

If you are still interested in the coast, then something like this:

4 nights Vancouver

3 nights Tofino - for wilderness, hiking, whale watching

1 night Parksville - wide sandy beaches

3 nights Telegraph Cove - for a grizzly bear tour

1 night Nanaimo - interesting small town with waterfront walks

1 night Vancouver

I would definitely do the coastal trip itinerary posted in #8 but try to squeeze in a day/night in Victoria instead of Nanaimo.

It has been mentioned that getting to and from Tofino is an all day affair from Vancouver. Personally I think that that is a bit of an exaggeration. Besides it is a lovely drive with a stop at Coombs and Cathederal Grove plus a gorgeous ferry ride.

Since you are from Northern Italy I worry that a trip to our Okanagan might not be what you are looking for as it will be a bit similar to what you are used to but not as nice. I really can't picture someone who maybe lives in/near Umbria being enamoured with our wine region.

As per the golf, you are used to European prices and are using Euros so any course that we find expensive will not be that for you.
