The Fairmont is in the middle of a concrete jungle-which few would call character-try the Bayshore instead.

Which Fairmont? There are 3. Hotel Vancouver, waterfront, pacific rim. All within 5-7 minutes walk from each other. Contrary to Sam I don't think the Bayshore is best place to stay.. Really depends on interests. Right now Rosewood Georgia would appear to b #1. It's 1 block from Hotel Vancouver. You can read reviews of all hotels if you go to the top of the forum page and in the green bar click on hotels.

Of the 3 Fairmonts downtown the swankiest is Fairmont Pacific Rim. It is newish and classy and not cheap. As a hotel it is top drawer. As a location it is centred in Sam's concrete across from the Convention Centre..

Agree that the Bayshore isn't the Best hotel in the city but it does have the Best location.

Oh for sure the Bayshore is the best all around city vacation hotel. What it gives up in age is made up in park type location, the vast lobby, the resort outside bar/pool and marina and the famous Westin Heavenly Bed. The Fairmont Pac Rim is classier and better located if downtown activities, like business meetings, were the priority.

Love the Bayshore but it's a hike if you're in town for shopping, concerts etc..and can't say I love their $5.50 charge for a cup of coffee:)

Going back to the original question, "best" is so subjective. Are you looking for the fanciest? The most hip? The best in terms of 5 star rating or the best reviews? As others have said, the Rosewood Hotel Georgia is probably "the best" right now for the ultimate hotel experience in Vancouver. The Fairmont Pacific Rim would be my first choice for a Fairmont brand hotel. But then again, I don't personally know you - I don't know what your style is, so it's hard for me to guess what would be best for you. :)

If you're doing a girl's getaway to Vancouver where you're going to be hanging around at cocktail bars in Gastown or downtown restaurants, or plan to do shopping, and whatnot - stay at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia of the Fairmont Pacific Rim. Both are pretty amazing spaces.

The Westin Bayshore is great, sure, but it's not great for an urban experience of Vancouver - it's for people that want to bask in Vancouver's scenery. It's on the other side of downtown from all the trendy restaurants and bars, next to Stanley Park. Gorgeous, sure, but... if you're just in town to drink, eat, and shop - not the best.

And my perrenial favourite, The Loden. Nice design, good restaurant, quiet neighbourhood, close to everything, corner rooms have wee views of Coal Harbour and Coast Mountains.

For "nice", faultless service and said to be gorgeous, have a look at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia. Centre city for evening walks.
