Victoria to Vancouver via ferry

Hi,

We are staying in Victoria 3 nights after driving over from Whistler via Nanaimo. We are going to take the ferry back to Vancouver via Swartz - Tsawwassen with our car on Monday 22 Jul. Just wonder if we should book the ferry and is there anytime we should avoid eg. is the afternoon or afterwork traffic going to be very heavy?

We are travelling with 2 young kids. We don't know what our plans are and was going to just see how we go that morning if we have any more sightseeing to do before deciding what time to head over for the ferry back to Vancouver.

Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks for your help!

After 3 pm the traffic into Vancouver from the Tswassen ferry terminal will be slow. This is due to the Deas Tunnel having 3 southbound lanes and one north in the afternoons..it's called the " counterflow" Opposite happens in the morning. This means you would want to catch the 1 pm ferry..to be at the tunnel before 3. If you don't mind a bit of traffic then you could take a later ferry. If you don't have to be somewhere in Vancouver at a certain time you could simply turn up at the ferry without a reservation...you might have a one hour wait. On a Monday it's often the first few ferries in the morning that are heavily booked. You can also check online or on news radio to see how the ferries are shaping up for the day.

I would suggest you try to organize your sightseeing in Victoria so that you can get any ferry on the 22nd up to 1 pm. Failing that, spend most of another day in Victoria and head for the 5 ferry. The latter would have you at the Massey Tunnel at about 7 pm and the highway will be back to normal.

Interestingly, the Massey tunnel is the only road tunnel below sea level in Canada. And when you get there, you will truly wonder why Queen Eliz II would be on hand at the opening ceremony. It once was the latest in tunnels, built in 1959, renamed the George Massey Tunnel in 1967, but now it is a dinosaur and gets quite congested. With population growth, what road anywhere would not be out of date in 54 years!! An increasing number of commuters have made it a very busy place in morning and evening rush hours. There are plans afoot for a replacement, but who knows when. It is possible to avoid the hot times of day though.
