3-Day Itinerary Suggestions for Vancouver?

Hi gang,

I'm travelling to Vancouver the 1st week of September in a party of 6 (we're in our 40's, our parents are mid-60's).

We are arriving via Royal Caribbean cruise ship on a Friday morning / flying home early Monday morning.

Looking for suggestions for an 3-day itinerary of the area that makes sense and gives us a good taste of the area. This is the 1st trip there for all of us.

This is the itineray I was thinking of (assuming good weather).

The challenge is figuring out when to pick up a rental car (would make sense to grab one near the airport considering we'd need to drive there on day of departure), or if we should bother renting at all (we'd only be doing so for a day trip to Whistler)

Also not the biggest fan of sleeping in the most densely populated areas, but will do so if it makes sense:

1) Day 1 (Friday):

---> arrive at ferry terminal

---> grab hotel downtown / no car (was looking at Robsonstrasse on Robson)

---> Stanley Park AM (is it worth visiting the aquarium there?)

---> Late lunch / shopping on Robson Street

---> Grouse Mountain PM (worth a visit? can we get there without a car?)

2) Day 2 (Saturday)

---> Granville Market AM

---> Museum of Anthropology (although would rather be outside if nice out)

---> ??? PM

---> sleep in downtown again, or on Granville Island (?)

3) Day 3 (Sunday)

---> Day trip to Whistler (with stops at Shannon Falls / Squamish / maybe Nairn Falls Provincial Park)

---> Sleep in Granville Island (so we're closer to airport Mon morning)?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Granville Island is only marginally closer to the airport so there isn't any advantage changing hotels. If you choose something like the Metropolitan(minutes from the cruise terminal) which is across the street from the airport subway you will have a top hotel and a quick and cheap transfer to the airport. Grouse Mountain is indeed worth a visit on a clear day. If you have a sunset dinner there the gondola is free. There is a free shuttle between the mountain and downtown. You can have the hotel concierge arrange a rental 6-7 passenger van for the day trip to Whistler. Aquarium? It's a rainy day diversion as is MoA.

Its worth noting that you do not arrive one of Vancouver's ferry terminals. The cruise ships come right into the city with most of them docking at Canada Place. Its also probably wise to write off Friday morning. It takes quite a long time to get everyone off the cruise ship and it will most likely be lunch time before you are sorted out at your hotel. You won't be able to check in, but they should be able to hold your luggage for you while you go out for lunch and perhaps a visit to Stanley Park.

The main point is that there is no advantage whatsoever to changing hotels. That would be a real waste. It would only take you about 30 minutes to walk from Robson to Granville Island. The Canada Line runs to the airport, with stations in the city and then runs along Cambie. GI would not put you any closer to the Canada Line for your run to the airport.

Transit is a great way to get around the city, including Grouse Mountain and Capilano River. The MoA is a bit of a journey by comparison, but still quite easy.

Other destinations you might want to consider would be: Vanier Park which contains the Museum of Vancouver and the Maritime Museum; Chinatown and the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

Thanks very much for the tips! Based on your suggestions, made some revisions to the itineray. Does this look more reasonable?

** Lodging for all 3 nights in one hotel somewhere near cruise terminal / Robson Street (I'll check out the Metropolitan, thanks - any other affordable places downtown to recommend?)

DAY 1 --> arrive Canada Place via cruise ship, get situated in hotel, bike or trolley around Stanley Park hitting key points (visit aquarium if raining), visit English Beach, ferry to Granville Island, shopping and dinner near Denman / Robson St

DAY 2 --> rent car near cruise terminal for day trip to Whistler (stopping at Shannon Falls / Brandywine Falls along the way)

DAY 3 --> either Vancover Art Museum or MOA in AM (parents will probably want one cultural stop on itineray), Kitsilano Beach for lunch, then Grouse Mountain in PM and have dinner there

Departure Day --> arrange shuttle to airport from hotel

Be careful with "affordable" hotels as your hotel will be the last memory you have of a trip you spent lots on. This is a major destination in high season and you get what you pay for. If you do not use Canada Line to the airport (see youtube for Canada Line) then you can contact the airport stretch limo service info@aerocar.ca 1-888-821-0021 for hotel pick-up with 24 hours notice.You will see the limos in front of the taxis when you arrive. yvr.ca/en/…hired-sedans-limousines.aspx You'll feel like a rock star. There is no shopping at the Denman end of Robson but to the left 15 minutes by foot is English Bay and to the right is bike rental (youtube riding Vancouver sea wall) and a fun Italian restaurant http://ciaobellavancouver.ca/.

In my years on TA, the Robsonstrasse Hotel has never been mentioned in the forum. So I read the reviews, which I'm sure you have read too. They seem to have some kind of problem with large group bookings, which your group will be. Several reports of the hotel cancelling such bookings. As well, the hotel is very likely going to be no frills and basic.

Here's another thought for you to check out. The Sunset Inn and Suites. It is located on a less busy residential street in the West End. They offer complimentary breakfast and parking.Their rates in the first week of Sept for 4 adults and 2 children is under $250 a night and the place will be night and day compared to the Robsonstrasse. If you didn't want to rent a car, that's fine. It's a $15-17 minivan cab ride to Canada Place cruise ship pier.

For how to get to Grouse Mountain, please read the Top Questions about that topic.

Another place to look at is the Blue Horizon. It is located on Robson Street and you would want to ask for a room on the back on perhaps a higher floor. Here the parking is $15 per night.

Both these hotels have spacious rooms. Remember that the downtown core is 2 km2 in size and can be walked lengthwise in 40 minutes and widthwise in 20 minutes.

***

As for your itinerary, try to get up Grouse before the last shows of the day. 4h30 for the lumberjack show, 5h30 for the birds of prey show. You need to allow a good hour on transit to get up the mountain from downtown.

With the Museum of Anthropology, which is on the UBC campus, you could also consider Nitobe Gardens, a cultivated oasis, and perhaps the Greenheart Canopy Walkway, also at UBC:

Thanks Muftimixandmatch for the hotel suggestions. I had booked the hotel through Hotwire prior to reading this, kind of regret it. I ended up getting the Hyatt Regency, not exactly in the location I wanted to be, but we'll deal - at least the price was right. Your tips for Grouse mountain will definitely come in handy, thanks also for the tips regarding Nitobe Gardens / Greenheart Canopy Walkway, two sites I otherwise wouldn't have known about.

The Hyatt is a good location and a better hotel than others listed so you did well.
