I will be in Vancouver for 2-4 days at the end of July. Any information you have for a first time visitor would be most appreciated. Budget is an issue. I will travel from Seattle-how, I am not sure yet-I will not have a car. Is downtown the best place to stay.? Can I walk or take public transportation to visit places. Where do you suggest exchanging US money for Canadian money.

What are some places not to miss?

Thank you,

Yes, stay downtown. Inn at False Creek might fit a budget. Amtrak is good for transport. Local transit in Vancouver works well but you'll walk to most places. http://www.vbce.ca/ at Pender and Howe is best for exchange, and there are exchange booths in shopping areas. Your bank card might be easiest for currency. Top questions on this page will give you things to see. So will the tabs at the page top.

Hi Suzanne ~

I would get to Stanley Park and Granvile Island. Generally speaking, it is better if you look through the Things to Do in order to find the activities and attractions that appeal to you. It's hard for us here to do that for a stranger. Once you have a short list, post them here and we can suggest some kind of order to make your time work well and how much time you should allow to get around to them.

On your other thread, I mentioned the YWCA Hotel.

Here's map of the downtown core, with the Inn at False Creek and the Y mapped out. And Pacific Central Station in case you come up on Amtrak Cascades. Drag the map around or zoom out to see Vancouver more completely.

Just a heads up that the first Monday in August is BC Day and a long weekend. You might want to get on making a hotel reservation fairly soon.

Take the Bolt Bus from Seattle. It is way cheaper than Amtrak. Also for money it depends on your bank - most large US banks have affiliate banks in Canada and you are best off withdrawing money from the ATM. For example BOFA allows withdrawals at Scotia for no fee or exchange rate. Check with your US bank.

If that does not work, best exchange rate is at the Vancouver Gold and Bullion exchange http://www.vbce.ca/rates/major-currencies . They have a couple of locations in Vancouver.
