Suggestions welcome for 3 days in Vancouver end of August.

My husband & I are arriving in Vancouver for 3 days late August prior to embarking on a HAL ship to do the inside Alaskan passage. We are quite adventurous people and love good food, wine/ sight seeing/ art/ shows and getting to see the real side of any place we visit. Some touristy things are great but enjoy going off the beaten track where tourists usually are targeted. Any suggestions are welcome! :)))

From your interests, it sounds like you might want to get beyond Vancouver to get "off the beaten track". Consider a day trip or an overnight on the Sunshine Coast. A short 40 minute ferry cruise that you can do by car or transit. Depending on your exact dates, art festivals in the second half of August include Power of Paint, Hackett Park Arts Fair, and Synchronicity...none of which require a rental car to attend.

Stroll the seaside communities, hike in the rainforest, sample fresh seafood, and start the relaxation of your cruise a couple of days early. www.sunshinecoastcanada.com

Hi Brumer ~

We are a very popular destination for tourists. I'm not sure there is anywhere around the city that is really "off the beaten track."

Will you have a car?

You could snoop around Main St, and Commercial Drive which are residential neighbourhood streets of shops and restaurants that may not attract so many tourists:

George C Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary will be pure nature, with Westham Island's rich, delta, river silt as flat as Holland.

Capilano Regional Park on the North Shore:

Adventurous eh? The real side eh? Any suggestions welcome eh? :-) Are you sure? Wreck beach off the far west cliff of UBC: http://www.wreckbeach.org/

Take the skytrain to New Westminster Station in New Westminster and walk across to the Quay and the boardwalk along the Fraser River, visit the market there.

Sticking with New West for a minute, with a car. It is one of our oldest cities, the first capital city of BC in 1859. There are some beautiful old heritage homes in New West. Anywhere near Queen's Park in this square on the map:

Any of the houses, churches, business buildings on this list:

Those are some suggestions for off the beaten track.

I second the suggestions for the Sunshine Coast & Commercial Drive. If you go to North Vancouver to see Capilano Park/Cleveland Dam, check out the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge while you're there. The seawall in West Vancouver is also nice (especially at sunset).

Other (day trip) suggestions:

- Bowen Island

- Take a scenic drive out to the Othello Tunnels via Highway 7. Go to Bridal Falls and pack a picnic lunch to eat on the lakeshore at Sasquatch Provincial Park. Walk the sandy beach at Harrison Hot Springs and head home.

- Check out Deep Cove in North Vancouver or Belcarra just past Port Moody. They're small, scenic oceanside towns that are rarely mentioned in tourist circles. Rent a kayak, go on a hike, or just enjoy the waterfront. If you go to Belcarra, have lunch or dinner at Rocky Point Park in Port Moody and walk the Shoreline Trail.

Grouse Mountain has staggering views but it is touristy if you have a car drive up Cypress Bowl in West Vancouver. I like West Vancouver check out Lighthouse Park you can get a "bluebus" from downtown and it will take you right there. Deep cove is nice and Lynn Canyon suspension bridge is free be sure to hike down the canyon it is beautiful.

I'll 3rd the suggestion for the Sunshine Coast. It's beautiful in an area surrounded by beautiful, especially if the weather is nice. Garden Bay area is one of my favourites.
