Suggestions on day trips

Hi,

We are traveling to Vancouver city for one week in Sept. We would like to do a couple of day trips. We do plan on renting a car for the day and going to Whistler. For what I have researched, Victoria Island would be too long and exhausting for a day trip. Any other suggestions? Also, using the skytrain, what stops are worth getting off and exploring?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Carolann and Jeremy

Here are my top pics as a local born and bred on the North Shore of Vancouver.

Brunswick Beach, Lighthouse Park, West Vancouver...some absolutely gorgeous trails and hidden beaches

Kayaking on the Pitt River, East of Vancouver in Pitt Meadows

White Rock, a charming little seaside town very close to the US border. (you have Crescent Beach, 1000 steps trail leading to some isolated beaches)

Maybe Cultus Lake or Harrison Hot Springs which is further out than the places first mentioned

+1 for White Rock. Low tide is fun.

Take either the Millenium Line or the Expo Line to Broadway-Commercial station and explore all the way north to Venables. Then to Hastings St. for a bus west back to the city.

Check the name of that Island again! :-))

"Where did the Victoria/Vancouver island mix-up come from????"

It's a common mistake made by first-time visitors to Vancouver. (Perhaps you've been to Toronto, which has "Toronto Islands".) Victoria is BC's capital city, located on Vancouver Island.

Actually, some of the nicest places to explore are reached by bus. For example, the #17 Oak will take you from downtown right to Vandusen Gardens; the #44 express will take you from downtown to UBC (Nitobe Gardens and Museum of Anthropology). The "skytrain" and the "Canada Line" are commuter-oriented. They may help visitors to get part-way to theirs destinations, but the stops are often in residential areas or geared towards transfers to buses. For example, to get to White Rock, you can take the Canada Line to Bridgeport station and then pick up a suburban bus (#351) to Crescent Beach in White Rock. (Another bus would have to be taken from central White Rock to the pier/restaurants on Marine Drive - C52.)
