2 or 3 nights in Gibsons or Nanaimo without a car

We're in Vancouver for awhile; looking for somewhere new to go for 2 or 3 nights over the Victoria Day holiday weekend. Without a car, what do you suggest? I know we can take the bus over to Horseshoe Bay, and then a ferry. We like to explore towns, walk, hike, and are ok taking public transportation. Thanks.

There's not enough to do in Gibsons to keep you entertained for 2 or 3 days.

Why don't you go to Victoria? Lots to do / see there that will keep you occupied for 2 or 3 days.

Nanaimo of course :)

Easy to take public transit or seaplane from downtown to Nanaimo. Easy to navigate on foot or via public transit.

Thank you. We've been to Victoria (which we enjoyed a lot; beautiful August weather) so are looking for something new.

Now considering Nanaimo. Do you think about a day and a half would be good there (2 nights)?

Nanaimo would be a good choice for 3 nights, 2 days:

Dinghy Dock Pub

The Bastion is historic, being a wooden fort/lookout against "the enemy" from the mid 1800s. It's NOT big, takes about 20 minutes or so to have a look.

Cab maybe to Crow and Gate Pub in Cedar south of Nanaimo

On the following map, Pin A is the ferry terminal, you need #2 bus, I believe, or you could walk into town, I think ~60 minutes. Pin C is The Crow and Gate Pub. If it's a nice day, you could sit out the back yard in the sun, at the picnic tables for a very pleasant experience.

Here are some of the things to see and do around Nanaimo:

Here is a PDF (loads quite slowly!) showing an insert map across the bottom of the page called Harbourfront. It shows you all the walkways along the harbour. To the right side is the Queen Elizabeth Promenade Park.

Follow the map's red line up to where it belongs in the larger scale city map. Now you will see a line called Harbourfront Walkway off to the right of QEPP, along the water all the way to the ferry terminal (white ferry icon.) This is walkable from the ferry if you are so inclined.

One take on the Waterfront Walkway (my how they hype it with sun and seagulls!):

And one more bit of info for the Waterfront Walkway:

gonanaimo.com/nanaimo/waterfront-tour.html

I'm a bit confused by the terms Waterfront Walkway and Harbourfront Walkway. Clearly there is a walkway at the harbour, then there is another walkway for 2-3 km to the ferry terminal. The names seem to be interchangeable on various websites.

Edit: More posts while I was typing. Maybe Dave could describe the difference if any between Waterfront and Harbourfront Walkways?
