Birding locations

Hi, we are keen birders and wildlife watchers, we will be on Vancouver Island for 2 weeks in September as part of a 3 week trip to Canada. We would be most grateful for any tips on good birding locations. Thank you.

Just started getting into birding so don't have a ton of advice for you however there is a Wildbird and Nature Store in Nanaimo with a blog that you can start with. http://www.thebirdstore.blogspot.com/

I do know that the Ancient Murrelet is some folk's list and it is possible to view that bird in and around Nanaimo. Couple of nesting Bald Eagle pairs at Piper's Lagoon Park in Nanaimo. As well at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park there is a large bay that attracts many birds. Qualicum Beach is known for its Brant Geese.

Hope this helps!

Hi Rav4England,

Here are a couple of websites to get you started on your Birdwatching adventure:

Tourism BC – Hello BC (Vancouver Island Bird Watching & Sanctuaries) = http://tinyurl.com/HelloBC-BirdWatching

Birding in British Columbia = www.birding.bc.ca/

Vancouver Island Abound (Birding Page) = www.vancouverislandabound.com/birding.htm

The Hello BC Website was a natural choice to find info… the others came from an easy enough search on GOOGLE, keyword(s) I used were – birdwatching on Vancouver Island.

There are some additional sites that also came up – Birding Blogs – Photo Pages – and even some Guided Birding Tours. You can GOOGLE again yourself, if you might be interested in any of that.

Hope this is helpful,

Cheers!

I posted the info on the other post ......will provide details soon on some sites and contacts. Vancouver island is not a particularly good place for "twitching" but is a wonderful place for seeing wildlife, including birds, in some marvellous ecosystems.

cheers - Jerry

Hi all, thanks for the info.

Geographic, this is a first visit to Canada - have been to North America birding/wildlife trips extensively over the last 20 years & had some wonderful sightings.

(Just watching the Olympic ice hockey final, what a fabulous games Canada has hosted, Canadians should be very proud)

End 2nd period. Kesler trash talking his own (NHL) teammate (Luongo) at between period interview! Ha! We're on it. But what an exciting game, open, offensive, TALENTED all round. Anyone could win. Hope it's us.

Thanks, that helps. I will try to concentrate on species /races that are characteristic of the Pacific Northwest.
