Orcas in Vancouver Island. Telegraph Cove vs Victoria

We are visiting Vancouver Island from jun-28 to jul-1.

Our first idea was to book a tour to Johnstone Strait from Telegraph Cove, but after reading previous topics in this forum, we're not sure if Victoria would be a better option.

Not completely sure what your question is? Are you wondering if there are whales in both locations? Or if it is worth the trip Up Island? ??? It does depend on what else you are interested in doing. You will have only 2 full days really. Can you clarify a bit more please?

Sorry MuftiMixandmatch and thaks for your answer, I’ll try to explain the whole thing better .

The question is:

Are there more chances of seeing Orcas in Victoria Area than in Johnstone Strait in early July?

We do want to book a tour to see Orcas, and I think the two best options are:

- Johnstone Strait Area (taking a boat from Telegraph Cove)

- Victoria Area (not sure about the departure place).

I’d prefer to do it from the first one, (that was our first idea), but I’m not sure if there will be Orcas there that early.

P.D: Iin fact we are going to spend 3 days and a half in Vancouver Island ( we’re leaving the island the morning of July-2).

The first pods of resident (fish eating) orcas usually return to the Johnstone Strait area in late June or early July. So while you are in this window sometimes they are seen earlier and other times not until a week into the month. So while your chances are good from Telegraph Cove they are likely better in Victoria during these dates just to see orcas. From Telegraph Cove you will still see lots of wildlife, humpback whales are now seen on most days as well and you could always join a grizzly bear viewing tour as well (can't do that in Victoria).

The whales are wild and not completely predictable. In either Telegraph Cove or Victoria they may have be seen the day before but swam out of range the next day even in the middle of the summer.

Hi Miguel0 ~

The chances are fairly equal because the boats go out to search and everyone hopes that "their" whales didn't pass by an hour ago, or later in the day or yesterday or tomorrow.

Here's some information about whale watching from northern Vancouver Island:

hellobc.com/en-CA/…Telegraph-Cove.htm

And here is some information about whale watching from Victoria:

http://www.princeofwhales.com/map_blue.html

The companies will let you know how many whales were sighted in the preceding week, so you can make up your mind about going.

One site for general information is hellobc.com. Put 'whale watching' in the search bar for much more information about the different locations.

To drive from Victoria to Telegraph Cove will take about 5.5 hours one way. The area is wild, magnificent and spectacular. You might have to use most of your 3 days to go Up Island.

Hope this helps.

It’s a pity we couldn’t stay longer in V. Island since it looks like a really beautiful place, but this is going to be our first time in Western Canada, and we have to go on our trip up to the Alaska border and then to the Rockies….

Thanks guys for your useful answers!!

For a 'wildlife experience' at that time I would choose the Port McNeill / Telegraph Cove area. [Black Bears, Black-tailed Deer, eagles and marine mammals]. Killer Whales are usually 'hit and miss' near Port McNeill that early in the year, [2009 was a good example] but the overall experience is better than Victoria.
