Two Days on Vancouver Island: What to do?

We are 4 active 60 year olds who will be on Vancouver Island for 2 days in early Sept.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what are some "must see/must do" attractions. In the abscence of any specifics we had planned to hire a car and drive out of Victoria for 1 day, staying somewhere one night and then returning to somewhere just out of Victoria. We would then catch a ferry back to Vancouver to catch a Cruise that is going up to Alaska.

It's a 3 hr drive to Campbell River. There you could visit the Museum and see the film on the blasting of Ripple Rock 50+ yrs ago - largest man made non-nuclear explosion. You will pass through Seymour Narrows right over top of Ripple Rock on your cruise.

Some things to see would be Cathedral Grove, Qualicum River Falls, Quinsam River Hatchery, Mount Washington, murals in Chemainus, BC Forest Museum in Duncan, Elk Falls in Campbell River.

The must-sees/dos in Victoria include Royal BC museum and high tea at The Empress; there's plenty to fill a day without the other must-see, Butchart Gardens. You can get there by public bus or buy a tour. Campbell River, while a great place, is just too far away, IMO, for a one-day up-and-back trip.

These are my suggestions for Victoria highlights:

Inner Harbour Causeway

Butchart Gardens - Look into Gray Line West's shuttle: http://www.graylinewest.com/

Royal BC Museum

Craigdarroch Castle

Helmcken House

Emily Carr House

Also have a look at the White Heather for high tea. It's highly rated and cheaper than the Empress. www.whiteheather-tearoom.com/index.html

On the way back down Island, you might like to visit a winery in the Cowichan Valley - http://www.vancouverisland.com/Maps/?id=83

In Ladysmith, I like In the Bean Time @ 18 High Street for lunch or just coffee/snack.

Ditto Chemainus and you can get a $1 brochure about the outdoor murals as you walk around.

At Duncan there is a First Nations centre that you might be interested in. We don't have as fully developed aboriginal culture as New Zealand, but this would give you an idea:

Check out the village of Cowichan Bay, galleries, food and a relaxed atmosphere. Cherry Point vineyard for wine tasting.

Ocean EcoVentures Whale watching in Cowichan Bay awesome half day tours to see ALL the marine wildlife of the area including 88 Orca Whales.

This tour is sometimes recommended on this forum -

It's best done as an overnight trip.

Thanks for that suggestion. I have had a look on Google maps as well and we will look to do the trip over a couple of days. Also considering the Pacific Marine Circle Route posted as an alternative. Thanks again

Thanks for that suggestion. I have had a look at the link, and it certainly sounds interesting with lots of photo ops. It does say that the road is unsealed and rental car co's may not let their vehicles go through there. We have no problem with this type of road....but...I read somewhere else..not sure where that it was sealed. Do you know the current situation. Thanks again.

The Pacific Marine Circle Route is a fully paved 4-5 hours journey from Victoria around and back to Victoria.

Yes the road is full paved now. It is a 4+ hr drive full circle, plus add whatever stopping time you have. You can make it a whole day adventure easily!
