Bear tours from Port McNeill

I am trying to find a good bear tour company for our group of 4 people in September next year. I have come across one called Running Bear Lodge but have not seen it referred to in any forums etc. Can someone tell me if they have used or know of someone that has used, this company? I am trying to find out if it is legitimate. Would appreciate any other suggestions people may have - as long as we get a chance to see some grizzlies feeding on salmon.

No first hand knowledge of this operation and until recently did not even know they had a website or were doing their own tours. I know of other operators who have used Trapper Rick's services. For the Trapper's Cabin and tour packages there I think you can expect more of a loosely scheduled "rustic Canadian wilderness experience" than a polished tourism product.

Other nearby (relatively speaking) bear tours would include The Great Bear Lodge http://www.greatbeartours.com/ that offer multi day tours and departs by float plane from Port Hardy, Tide Rip Tours http://grizzlycanada.com/ offering day trips by boat from Telegraph Cove, and Knight Inlet Lodge http://www.knightinletlodge.com/ offering multi day trips departing by float plane form Campbell River

Thanks Kingfisher Kayaking. I have looked at the other operators that you suggested but the fact that Running Bear Lodge was a real wilderness experience drew us to that. When you say that other operators have used Trapper Rick - was that a good thing or not?

Hi There,

The closest option for you to do a Grizzly Bear tour from Port McNeill would actually be to go to Telegraph Cove, about a 30 minute drive from Port McNeill. Their company there is called Tide Rip Tours, they leave at 7:00am and their tours last for about 8 hours and include a boat ride, then a bus to a viewing platform for 288$ per person. Here is their website:

http://www.tiderip.com/

Campbell River has a few more options for Grizzly Bear viewing. CR is about a 2 and 1/2 hour drive South of Port McNeill/Telegraph Cove. Our tours also last for about 8 hours. Here are the companies that run tours from Campbell River:

Discovery Marine Safaris

Aboriginal Journeys

http://www.aboriginaljourneys.com/

Campbell River Whale Watch

http://www.campbellriverwhalewatching.com/

Eagle Eye Adventures

http://www.eagleeyeadventures.com/

Knight Inlet Lodge

http://www.grizzlytours.com/

Our tours from CR are salmon dependant, so they begin the tours at the very end of August/ beginning of September. Tide Rip Tours from Telegraph Cover usually start earlier than those from CR.

Thanks CRivergirl - we were hoping to do a tour that lasted a few days with accommodation etc included. I have looked at the tours you suggested but wasn't sure how we would go if we wanted to book for a couple of consecutive days. Have you heard of Running Bear Lodge and Trapper Rick?

Not having first hand knowledge and the unlikelihood of getting many reviews on Running Bear Lodge I suggest emailing them and a few other lodges with questions and detailing what you are looking for in your trip. Then compare them to get what is best suited to you. For a list of all members of the Commercial Bear Viewing Association go to http://www.bearviewing.ca/members.htm

Thanks heaps for your help KingfisherKayaking. Running Bear Lodge is on the list of members of the Commercial Bear Viewing Association so that makes me feel a bit better at least
