Prepare for cool even cold weather especially in the mountains-the Island shouldn't be too bad.
The island will be fine, its the Rockies you'll need to check out at that time of year. I think your options may be quite limited, with a lot of closures of some of the main sights due to everything still being frozen. Even a month later in the Rockies will be cold and grey and icy.
Yes there are many campgrounds that open up in the middle of May. The openings of each provincial park/ campground will depend on when that area becomes snow free. Two places that you can check for information is http://www.bcparks.ca and sitesandtrailsbc.ca/search/search-location-c… and for information on campgrounds in the national parks, you can go to http://www.pc.gc.ca and they will be able to tell you. I know that there are several of parks that do open up, I am just not sure exactly when. I hope that this helps you. Please feel free to email me should you have any questions.Edited: 23 September 2011, 01:01
