First time visitors to Vancouver

We will be in Vancouver for the first time and want to visit Vancouver Island. We are 40 somethings, with kids of 12 and a grannie of 76. As we are planing our trip to go very very soon, can someone advise where we should go on the Island. We dont want to hike or fish, but generally like nice category hotels. Where should we go? Thanks

Hi MCJJ999 ~

There are 3-4 popular places on the Island to visit. Victoria city and environs, including the Pacific Marine Circle Route. The Parksville/Qualicum Beach area. The Tofino area. The north Island for grizzly watching, whale watching and sea kayaking.

It might help you to know that it takes about 4 hours by land/ferry between Vancouver and either Victoria or Nanaimo. It takes ~7 hours driving, stops extra from tip to tip of the Island, ~2.5 hours from Victoria to P'ville, ~5 hours from Victoria to Tofino, ~3 hours from Nanaimo to Tofino. You have the option of Hwy 1 up Island, or Hwy 4 across Island. You would need ~2-3 nights for Victoria, ~3 nights for Tofino and ~3 nights for up Island, plus the necessary driving to get between.

The following website is set for Parksville. You can enter any of the above names in the search bar to explore the other areas: britishcolumbia.com/regions/towns/index.asp… ..... This website is for Parksville tourism which provides some photos of the area for your consideration: http://www.visitparksvillequalicumbeach.com/

Thanks MM&M, really appreciate it. Normally plan trips a year in advance but havnet been able to this year and Canada is a BIG country (hehe!) . We will do a bit of time in Vancouver, before doing an Alaska cruise, but wondered is there anything else that is near and worthwhile as have 5 days to enjoy in this part of the world.

<<anything else that is near>> This is a very general question. I want to ask where? Victoria? Vancouver? somewhere near Parksville (as that's where I've referred to.)

It would be helpful if you would post your arrival date and city, your departure date and city and how you want to split up your time - days here days there. Thanks.

MCJJ999, will you be renting a car prior to your cruise? Or would you prefer to take a tour bus over to the Island?

You will need a car to explore Vancouver Island, but if you are just wanting a short pre-cruise getaway, Victoria is a lovely, walkable city (rental car not necessary) with nice hotels, good restaurants, a fantastic museum, great scenery, and so much more!

Pacific Coach offers trips from downtown Vancouver or YVR to downtown Victoria. They also have a Vancouver Cruise Ship Terminal Service, which would return you from Victoria to your cruise ship on your day of departure.

So many beautiful options here - you are spoiled for choice. Vancouver Island is a popular destination, but needs a good 10 days to see properly. Does your 5 days include the time you have for Vancouver?

I'd be inclined to recommend that you stay put in Vancouver for those 5 days and just make day trips from the city to some of the outlying areas - like the Village of Steveston and Fort Langley, as well as Whistler, which is a great destination for a day or an overnight. If you have 3 days in Vancouver, then you have two days to go out somewhere else. Victoria, on the Island, would be a great destination for a short couple of days.

Victoria B.C.,, its a great place for a few days, and you can daytrip to quite a few places from there. Its actually a nice step down from Vancouver,, the driving is easy, lots to see, great restaurants and some very nice hotels.

The Ferry ride over is pretty darn nice too, you will wonder why you bothered with a cruise, lol
