Vancouver and Vancouver Island

We are in the middle of planning a 3 week trip. 12-14 days are planned. just looking for ideas on Vancouver, Victoria and Vancouver Island. We are a late 30s couple pretty much in to everything; good food & drink, wildlife, outdoors, culture, cities, country etc etc. The one 'must do' is a whale and a bear watching trip or two. we are happy to rent a car or to use public transport. Ideas of destinations, trips accommodation, resturants please

Welcome to the forum, uncleTJ ~

What are your dates? this year or next? You will need a car for Vancouver Island, but not for Vancouver.

You can see whales out of Victoria, Tofino, Campbell River, Telegraph Cove. You can see grizzly bears through the summer and fall out of Telegraph Cove, but only from September on out of Campbell River.

With 7 nights to give, you could spend 3-4 nights in Vancouver and 3 in Tofino for whale watching, beaches, trail walking/hiking, village restaurants and shops. Tofino is wilderness and ocean and takes 6-7 hours to get there from Vancouver by car and ferry. Grizzly tours can be found in Telegraph Cove, through mid-October or so and in Campbell River, but only from September on.

If you wanted a more city experience, you could spend 3-4 nights in Victoria and spend some time between Victoria and Port Renfrew on the Pacific Marine Circle Route.

You are currently on the Vancouver Island Forum. To the left sidebar you will find Things to Do. Have a look in there, especially the Attractions and Tours tabs. That will give you a good idea of what there is to see and do on VI and where things are, and what appeals to you.

Some other places to do your research will be on the Vancouver Forum and Tofino Forum. Specific city/town Forums are the best place to narrow down your search for accommodations and restaurants. On the British Columbia Forum (click on the blue print link above your avatar) you will find in first position, a collection of Trip Reports. These are invaluable resources for seeing what others did when they were here and on Vancouver Island. On each and every forum, you will find Top Questions to the upper right. The Vancouver Forum has extensive information for our area.

www.hellobc.com is a great resource for checking out Victoria, Vancouver Island and Vancouver.

Tofino: tofinotime.com/activities/tofinohiking.htm

You will also need to look at BC Ferries: www.bcferries.com

What you might do now, is do your homework, sort out what attractions and activities appeal to you and build a tentative itinerary from that information. When you are ready, post that itinerary here for comment, confirmation, tweaking. By giving the posters here a frame of reference for your time, you will get lots of concrete suggestions for making a holiday.

Right. If you can avoid the first weekend in September, you would have a more pleasant time of it here getting around. The first Monday of September is Labour Day long weekend. Families slugging it out one direction or the other on the ferries to the Island and across the border to get home in time for school on the Tuesday.

September is usually a great month on Vancouver Island...the crowds have gone home, weather is usually really nice and yet there's still lots to do.

There's a few places you can do this, but my personal recommendation is to look at the north island, around Port McNeil/Telegraph Cove.

Hi!

Since you 13 months to plan you might want to do a bit of reading on the net. Frommers has a great site with loads of info, suggested itineraries, printable walking tours, hotel and restaurant recommendations. We find this site invaluable.

Once you've got a bit of an itinerary that meets your needs, come back with it for comment from the many volunteers on this site.

Happy planning!
