Cheapest Ferry

Hi

I've searched a few times for ferry crossings to Vancouver Island from Vancouver, but does anyone know if there is a particular route that is cheaper? In the UK it lets you search by price etc but this doesn't - maybe that is because it is one set price?

Many Thanks

BC Ferries is the only company making this trip so "no" there is no cheaper way. Can be cheaper if you are a walk on passenger not taking a car, but that is the only difference.

As cruiseryyc notes there is only one company, coming from Vancouver to Vancouver Island, and we do not enjoy discounted pricing as you do in the UK. There is one set price by the only company offering this service, our provincially owned ferry company, BC Ferries.

BC Ferries is an extension of our highways system. It is "owned" by the provincial government but run by an arms length company. We just don't have the demand (population) needed for another company or companies to set up business. In off season the ferries can run half full. In the summer on the 4 long weekends we have, there can be 3-4 ferry wait lineups on the Friday and Monday travel days. They operate at a loss with only the two "big" runs: to Swartz Bay and Departure Bay making a profit.

They are big ferries, taking hundreds of cars, good upkeep, comfortable, cafeteria, coffee shop, lounges, promenade deck, gift shop and nautical miles of views.

We can advise you which ferry(ies) to take to best get to your destination or to follow your preferred itinerary.

Hi

Many thanks for your replies. We will be travelling from Surrey to Victoria then returning from Campbell River going to Whistler. I'm guessing its cheaper to get a round trip then two separate journeys?

The first one will be the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay run. Then from Campbell River it will be the Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay run.

Tickets are sold one way. No R/T tickets are available. Nothing is cheaper for travellers in your situation. There is a card that can be loaded with a minimum amount that gives locals and a few road-less-travelled visitors a discount on the smaller runs. You will not be taking those ferries. BC Ferries runs about 40 ferries.
