2 adults, 1 8 yr old - June 28-July 5 - need trip ideas

We are 2 parents and 8 yr old. Fly in to Bellingham WA (from San Francisco) on 6/27 nite. Pickup rental car 6/28. Need to arrange ferry to Vancouver Island.

We are very adventurous, love nature, hiking, kayaking, wildlife, etc. We would rather stay in an interesting treehouse than a 5 star resort. We're not big foodies, and are happy to picnic and eat where locals eat. Our 8 yr old is very easy -- shes a big reader and naturally curious. A night in Victoria would be fun to explore city. Perhaps a diffrent ferry back to Bellingham area.

I am thinking we go to 2 areas plus Victoria...

any suggestions on what to do, where to go?

With 8 days it sounds like North Island ( Telegraph Cove or Port McNeill) and Tofino /Ucluelet area is where you want to be.

1 night Victoria

3 nights Tofino

3 nights Telegraph Cove area

1 night Parksville

Ferry from Tswassen to Victoria on the 28th

Ferry from Duke Point ( just south of Nanaimo) to Tswassen

on the 5th then drive across border for flight home.

As it will be long weekends on July 1 and the 4th you need ferry reservations and accommodation reservations now. Some places may already be booked.

Look at kayak trips on the north island for 3 days as well.

Drive time Victoria to TC will be about 6 hours so lots of time for stops in between

Drive time TC to Tofino another 5.5-6 hours

Well there actually are tree houses of a sort-not sure if they suit or not.

In any case you're headed to the right place-Vancouver Island is a wonderland for folks like you.

As others have said North Island is an option but it's a haul. Cape Scott is fantastic and on my list. Conversely Strathcona Prov Park in Courtney/Comox offers lots of opportunities for recreation.

Honestly I'd do some time in Tofino...beaches, surfing, kayak, modest and some good food

Thanks for all input. I'm working on Tofino lodging now as it seems pretty booked. Will check Courtney/Comox next.

Try Ucluelet - close to Tofino but cheaper.

Do you have any interest in ziplining? If so, check out West Coast Wild Adventures, about halfway across Vancouver Island on Highway 4. We visited Vancouver Island two years ago and did the ziplines here. It was fantastic!

Of course, Goats on the Roof at Coombs is a fun, quirky stop, too, as you head across the island!

To reiterate - We are very adventurous, love nature, hiking, kayaking, wildlife, etc. We prefer interesting over luxury lodging. We're happy to eat where locals eat. Our 8 yr old is very easy -- shes a big reader and naturally curious.

- here's where we are in planning -

6/28 Ferry & arrive Victoria around 2pm -tour & stay night in Victoria

6/29 Victoria all day - late afternoon depart for Tofino/ Ucelet area (need to find lodging)

6/30 Tofino area

7/1 Tofino area

7/2 morn depart for North Island- west or Telegraph Cove area or similar -

5 hour drive but lots of stops to make(I am reading that this area the wildest most beautiful part of island)

7/3 North Island

7/4 afternoon head down to Nanaimo

7/5 Nanaimo AM - ferry to mainland and late afternoon flight home

My question is about going all the way up to North Island. We could take that time and go to Salt Spring, or Quadra, or one of the other islands which sound totally cool (and less tourist/crowded than Victoria and Tofino inevitably will be in July..... any advice?

No doubt we'll be back - the more research I do the more I wnat to stay a month!
