Totem Poles - Vancouver and/or Victoria

My son (age 13) is studying totem poles this year so we plan to make a trip to BC over his winter break - around New Year's or early January.

We plan to travel (by car, but maybe fly) from our home in Portland, OR. We can carve out 3-4 nights for the trip. We want to see as much as possible. In addition we love walking, biking and good food!

Should we go to Vancouver (Stanley Park) or Victoria (Royal BC Museum)? Is there any way we can visit both during a 4 night trip? If so, how do we make that work -- we need transportation logistics.

Would love itinerary guidance and advice.

Thanks!

This article may be of interest to you - it highlights several areas where you can see totem poles in British Columbia: …travel-british-columbia.com/where-to-see-to…

The one place in Vancouver that you may find interesting that isn't listed in the above noted article is the BC Museum of Anthropology: http://moa.ubc.ca/

The other place not listed, but also worthwhile to visit is the Royal BC Museum - Thunderbird Park which is listed in the article is right next door.

I would suggest two nights in Vancouver - to hit the Museum of Anthropology, Stanley Park, and the Capilano Suspension Bridge and one night in Victoria to check out the Royal BC Museum and Thunderbird Park.

It will take most of one day to drive from Portland to Vancouver British Columbia (and most of one day back)

The trip by car from Vancouver to Victoria will take a half day each way. With travel time you may want to budget 3 nights and 4 days - but totally feasible.

There are other aboriginal art and cultural experiences as well - so if other than totem poles are of interest there are other related places to explore as well.

You could visit Duncan. There are lots of totem poles there. It's about 1 hour drive from Victoria. I think your son would love walking around the town and discovering all the different totem poles. All the totem poles are outside so there is no charge. Drive 30 mins further north and you will find Chemanius - world famous murals painted on most of the buildings. I honestly think there are more totems in Duncan than in the museums, but I could be wrong.
