Favorite Foods

What is your personal favorite -

Overall resturant?

Place for picking up food for a picnic?

Place for fish and chips?

Price is flexible -- if the food is worth the cost.

Overall restaurant - Il Terrazzo for a really nice dinner, 5th Street Bar and Grill for a casual lunch or dinner

Place for picking up food for a picnic - Thrify Foods deli - great wraps and salads

We don't go out for fish and chips much so I don't really have a favorite.

This is the 2nd vote for Il Terrazo as best overall. It is an outstanding Italian restaurant.

Best food for a picnic - I would go with Market on Yates Deli.

Fish & Chips, well there's nothing here like in Britain but I wouldn't recommend Barb's. It's okay but it's more of a tourist trap.

You're better off at the neighbourhood fish and chip places like Fairfield Fish & Chips, Haultain Fish & Chips, Willows Galley.

We just went to Irish Times on Government Street for lunch today.

(we are being tourists in our own home town for the next 3 days)

They had a 2 for one special for fish and chips ..num num num

Service was not great, could have been an off day, but my oh my the fish and chips were superb. The servings were almost too big to eat for one person.

They were even better than Haultain or Brady's

And I revised my choice for picnic fixin's too. Try The Market on Yates

My new favorite overall restaurant, replacing Pagliacci's as a long time favorite (still great) is The Superior. Really unique tapas style offerings, great live music and interesting decor. You need a reservation:

I'm still going to say Barb's for fish and chips just because of the location on fisherman's wharf. Spinnakers Brew Pub has pretty good fish and chips too and a great atmosphere and setting - but it's a bit of a change using battered wild bc salmon

I second the vote for the Yates Street Market. It's got great stuff - hard to make up your mind there, take a big picnic basket.

If you are outside of Victoria, in Cowichan Bay there's a great organic bakery and artisanal cheese shop beside one another - the perfect little picnic

Best place for a picnic you don't have to make yourself - just outside of Duncan, is the little indoor/outdoor bistro at Merridale Cidery. The bistro looks out onto the orchard. The chicken pot pie (really chicken and mushrooms in a wonderful sauce served in puff pastry) is to die for.
