first time vist to Vancouver Island

Hi

We will be visiting Vancouver Island for 3 days in early October and are clueless as to where to stay.

Is the city near the ferry? Anything we should definately try to do. Does anyone know some nice low key accommodation maybe cabins etc. Thanks!!!

The BC Ferries terminal is at Swartz Bay at least 30 minutes from downtown Victoria. The airport is a few miles south of the ferry terminal. Also part way between but to the west is Brentwood Bay where the popular Butchart Gardens are located.

Gardens, whale watching, hiking, castles, museums, and galleries are the main attractions. You could also spend time up the island rather than in Victoria. Research the things to do section here for Vancouver Island and see what interests you.

Inner Harbour hotels, assorted B&B's and other accomodations are available. Here's a site to get you started. www.travel.bc.ca/victoria-bc/hotels.php

Well, your question really depends on which city you intend to visit. I'm assuming you want to go to Victoria but Nanaimo is also accessible by ferry from Vancouver.

Victoria is about a 45 minute drive from the ferry terminal although it is very accessible by city bus which is a very cheap $2.25 for the trip into town.

You definitely must see the Butchart Gardens and the Royal BC Museum. Whale watching is typically an exciting adventure as well. Now as for accomodations, cabins don't really exist in the city so your options are hotels or B&B's.

If you're looking for low-key hotels, Traveller's Inns are good choices or any Best Western. There are two in Victoria. One in the heart of downtown and the other closer to the harbour. If you're interested in whale watching, I believe one of the Best Westerns has a package deal with Orca Spirit Whale Watching and WildCat Whale Watching.
