Victoria hotel

Is the Marriott Inner Harbor a good choice for being in the heart of it all? We enjoy walking to places, not to have to take the car. Any other suggestions?

Just checked out their website and it would be a great location. I would make sure to ask for a upper room facing the harbour though. You would be able to walk to everything in downtown Victoria that you would want to see; as well as being within walking distances for dinners in nice restaurants. The only time you would need to use your car would be to get to Butchart Gardens, if you were wanting to go there.

That sounds great. And yes we wanted to visit Butchart Gardens and it looked like we would need the car. I looked up the Fairmont Empress, do you think that is a better choice because it's a well known hotel.

The Empress is an old hotel (oldest in Victoria) and while it has been refurbished in recent years, the rooms are still much smaller than what you would get at the newer Mariott. Certainly the Empress is worth a visit; if you like curry, their Bengal Lounge has a wonderful curry buffet at lunch time. The Empress is also famous for it's afternoon tea; however, and this is my opinion only, there are much nicer, cheaper places to experience an afternoon tea in Victoria including Butchart Gardens.

Thanks. Maybe I will make it a point to visit the Empress and stay at the Marriott. Are they near each other?

The Marriott is a great hotel, great service and close to everything. Another great hotel is the Magnolia which is a boutique hotel also 1 block from the Inner Harbour. It even has breakfast included and has a lovely spa.

The Empress is a great hotel as it's full of history and great dining options but as one poster said, the rooms are small, old and some of the rooms don't have air conditioning. Stay elsewhere but make sure you visit the Empress. They have some old photos of the harbour and hotel up in the hall which are always interesting to see.

I prefer the Marriot, Magnolia, Delta, Laural Point Inn and Grand Pacific (not necesarily in that order). All the hotels are within walking distance, with some offering views of the inner harbour. It's just a matter of preference. Either of the hotels will do you fine.

Wow!! thanks to Dforce for filling us in on the amazing $101 per night deal at the Fairmont Empress. You have to book by 3/24, but the rate is in effect for all travel through almost the end of the year. I know that people complain about small rooms, etc. and it might not compare to the newer high end hotels, but the rate is unbeatable.

Thanks! Just booked it at the rate of $101 canadian. Good deal. After taxes and everything it totaled $232. Wow, taxes in Canada are high, but still a great deal.
