Sooke area, for outdoor activities from Victoria?

Hi,

We will be visiting Victoria in June, arriving Friday and leaving Sunday. We have visited in the past and would like to do something different one of the days-- perhaps explore the coastline.

On the day we arrive, we plan to go directly from the ferry to Butchart Gardens, for most of the day, returning to Victoria to sightsee in the Inner Harbor in the late afternoon or evening, with dinner in town. The next day, we would like to spend some or most of the day out of town in an area of beautiful scenery, with opportunities for hiking, walking on the beach, and/or kayaking. We'd like to keep the drive to less than an hour each way. Would the area around Sooke be a good option? Or someplace else? And if so, what parks, beaches or areas would you suggest for a 1/2 day visit?

Thanks!

The area around Sooke would be perfect. There are beaches marked as you are driving along the highway - China Beach and French Beach are two that I recall- beautiful wild, crashing, open ocean! Be sure to stop at Point No Point for lunch or tea. Or plan to stay out at Sooke Harbour House for dinner.

Enjoy!

Just a note, the beaches are past Sooke by about a half hour drive but it does sound like what you'd be looking for. I recommend French Beach. There isn't anything else nearby so Kayaking isn't an option unless you rent Kayaks in Sooke and take them with you. Even then, if you've never Kayaked on open ocean I wouldn't try it without someone experienced.

Thanks to both of you. Sooke it is then. Perhaps we will pass on the kayaking; I was thinking of a more protected kind of setting like in the Puget Sound-- perhaps we will do our kayaking in Bellingham. Are there any reasonably gentle, 1 to 2 hour hikes in beautiful scenery-- either coastal or forest-- in that area? Provincial park, or the like?

Here are three of our favorites in the area: East Sooke Park, Whitty's Lagoon, and Matheson Lake. All have lots to look at. More details at:

Sooke is definitely a great option for the outdoor family. You can hike, go to fantastic beaches, and you can also kayak. You've been given some great recommendations for beaches and parks for hiking.

I would recommend kayaking in the Sooke basin. There is actually a company called Rush Adventures and they have some great kayaking tours. My favourite is the moonlight paddle.

From the Inner Harbour to Sooke? 45 mins minimum. It's a beautiful drive once you're out of the city.
