August weekend - trip agenda - comments/tips please

We Husband Wife 50s and son 13 are in Whistler arriving 8 leave 12 August, with no car. Comments/tips please:

Plan is arrive Friday quick look around Village eat and sleep; Saturday P2P or Zip Wire; Sunday walk perhaps to a lake or horse ride or rafting; Monday P2P or Zip Wire; Tuesday am walk around and then return to Vancouver leave around lunchtime.

1. Do we stay in like Glasier's Retreat or North Village want to be able to walk around early evening get a meal but not be still awake at 2 in the morning. Do buses run in the Summer and will we need them?

2. Do we book Peak to Peak in advance on-line from UK or buy there on a clear day (is morning mist or rain likely to ruin views in August - $m question!) and would a Monday be less busy - is busy a problem in the Summer?

3. Zip wire we thought to do this on a different day from the Peak to Peak - just how fit does one have to be - I'm not.

4. Horse riding - where locally (no transport)?

5. Rafting where (no transport)?

6. Do we need an apartment or as we have no transport to bring food with us would we just be as well to use a hotel and get breakfast in the Village (or upper Village?)

Whistler is very much a walkers village and I think you'll find there are lots of people there without transport. As far as I know, most of the larger tour operations include transportation from the village, because so many people do not have cars.

Lots of restaurants in Whistler with a range of prices, and easy grocery shopping too.

Do you mean Glacier's Reach (located in the north village) or Glacier Lodge (located in the upper village) Both are within walking distance to anything you need, which also means that you don't need to use the bus. Glacier's Reach has private hot tubs on the patio of some units.

2. You can buy tickets at the window, and go either day depending on the weather. There is no need to pre-book in advance. It's hard to say how the views will be in rain/cloudy weather, as it changes at the top of the mountain, but there are webcams available if you want to take a look in the morning before going up.

3. Zip Trek - you don't need to bed fit at all. For the Bear tour there is a minimum weight of 65 pounds and Eagle tour is minimum 75 pounds. Maximum weight is 275 pounds. You'll need 3 hours for Zip Trek and about 3 hours for the Peak to Peak (more if you plan on hiking at the top).

4. Horse riding - this is done in Pemberton. You can book through a company that will include transfers to/from (approx. 20 minute from Whistler)

5. Rafting – again you can book though companies that offer transportation to/from raft site

6. Most condo’s have full kitchens (fridge stove, microwaves, pots, pans, cutlery etc.) . There are two grocery stores in the village that you can buy things to make simple meals. Some of the hotels also have kitchens or kitchenettes for you to at least make coffee, cereal, toast.

You might also consider an ATV but you might want to check to see if your kids are old enough to ride alone. Lost Lake always good for a day trip or renting bikes and riding the valley trail.

Glacier Reach does have private hot tubs but be warned this place is party central I used to own there you might want to check out other places in village north eg. Northstar,, Symphony.

Canoeing would be another option.

You mention you would like to do the PEAK 2 PEAK for 2 days? If you do pre-book online in advance you get the 2nd day free. You can pre book online 48 hours in advance and this will be enough time to check out the weather forecast first. All the hiking trails will be open by mid-August so 2 days will be nice so you can explore both Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. - Marie
