Winnipeg Hi Hostel

We are looking for safe, cheap accomodation in April. Has anyone stayed at the Hi-Hostel?

Don't stay there. Horrible area of town. Although most areas are bad now a days. The Hostel isnt really for budget minded travelers as it is more for vagrants and down-n-outers.

Thank you for the advice. Would the Inn at the Forks be safe? We are really freaked by the posts about crime. We will not be bringing a vehicle and will be walking.

The Inn at the Forks is very safe, but also very pricey. If you want something a little more budget-minded try The Norwood Hotel. It's just across the river(and down a bit) from The Forks and gets pretty good reviews. It's on a good bus route and would be more of a walk than The Inn at the Forks to many of the sites.

What are you planning on doing while in Winnipeg. This would help give suggestions as to where to stay.

Are you arriving by bus or plane?

Not sure of your budget but handy to the train station is the Hampton Inn. Lots of good reviews on TA. You could walk to the Forks from here to get a choice of restaurants or the Keg on Gary is close as well. The Delta is right downtown with Pasta La Vista restaurant right across the street and shopping.

The Forks and Winnipeg Art Gallery are both downtown and walkable. The Zoo is in Assiniboine Park several miles west on Portage Ave. You'll have to bus to it, get off on Portage Ave. walk across the footbridge into the park and then walk a ways into the park to the zoo itself. (I don't think any buses go into the park, but I stand to be corrected.) You should also make a point of going to the Manitoba Museum which is also downtown and walkable. You can spend several hours there. It's fascinating. The Planetarium and newly refurbished Science Centre are attached to the Museum.

The Inn at the Forks, Hotel Fort Garry and Hampton Inn are the hotels within easy walking distance of the train station. You might want to take a bus(depending on amount of luggage) or cab to any other hotels.

I agree with the Hampton Inn suggestion; good location for your plans and will be cheaper than the Fort Garry or Inn at the Forks. It's a 5 min walk to the Forks, about 15 min. to the Art Gallery, and about 15(?) to the Museum. Under 5 min to the train station.

I have stayed there once, it was very nice. And I believe it also includes free breakfast which is always good for the budget-minded traveller!
