Mother's Day Brunch?/Dinner?

Hi. I'm thinking about visiting my mom for Mother's Day, and I'm no expert anymore on nice and unique places for a nice brunch or dinner.

I would like to go someplace classy casual, not fancy.

I don't mind a buffet, but quality over quantity.

If there's something around that we can/visit do closeby as an activity that would be nice too.

Is there a nice restaurant now in Assiniboine Park? I think I may have heard something about that in passing too.

Mom needs to follow a gluten-free diet too, so if you have any insight there as well, that would be awesome.

I would suggest you contact the Inn at The Forks. I do not know for sure if they are doing a "special" Mother's Day brunch but they probably are. They do have a brunch every Sunday anyway that is very very nice, good food, somewhat classy. It would not surprise me if they could help in the gluten-free area as well.

That's great advice. I was thinking about staying a couple of nights at Inn at the Forks too, so that might work nicely. Thanks

The Fort Garry Hotel does a spectacular brunch every Sunday morning also. You must book ahead well in advance for Mother's Day. There is a new restaurant in Assiniboine Park but I can't remember the name of it. It used to be called Tavern in the Park but they closed down several months ago and someone else has taken it over now. It's something like Bistro 55 - perhaps someone else knows the name of it. Both of these places would be doing a buffet on Mother's Day and I'm sure your Mom could find plenty of gluten-free foods from the various salads through smoked salmon to roast meats.

The Fort Garry would be hands down the best buffet, priceiest as well though. It's about $40-50 per person. I really like the buffet at Buccacino's in Osborne Village. If you want to get away from buffets you might want to try Cora's. They have a location on Waverly and another at the Franco Manitoban centre on provencher (not frar from the forks). They do great onlettes, and they have a few gluten free dishes. Plus, everything comes with a ton of fresh fruit.

Personally I have found that the Fort Garry has gone downhill somewhat...seems a little scruffy around the edges to me although I certainly would still have brunch there if I was hungry!

If you are planning to stay at a hotel though I would much prefer the Inn at the Forks.. the rooms at the Fort Garry are quite small.

I'll second the Buccacino's recommendation -- I haven't been to their Sunday buffet but I've eaten lunch/dinner there probably close to 20 times (including their lunch buffet a couple of times) and have never been disappointed.

I think it will fit your request of "classy casual but not fancy" and very likely quality over quantity as well. For Mother's Day I'd definitely call for a reservation a few days ahead or more. Here is info on what is in their buffet:

Not sure about the gluten-free thing; I'd contact them, they will likely be able to help you out. I think you can email from their website.

For a unique venue and if you have no minors, you might look at McPhillip's Street Station or Club Regent Casinos. Lovely dining rooms.

Thanks so much for all the great ideas.

I'm not going to be able to come to Winnipeg that weekend after all, but will try for something near then. I plan to just show up and surprise her - so it should be fun.

Thanks again!

Hello,

The brunch at the Inn at the Forks (The restaurant is called The Current and their brunch menu is on-line). Its very good and fancy. Everything from omlette stations to lamb to sausage to smoked salmon and fresh pickeral. It's about $30 per person (which might be more on Mother's day) and you would definetly need a reservation in advance. We've been a few times and enjoyed it.
