Help - driving from New York !

Hello, our initial plan is to go to Cape Breton through a plane ride to Halifax. however, due to medical reason I am not able to fly. Can someone help me if this is possible to drive to Cape Breton with one night stop only? If it is, if you can give us a suggestion the best place to do the stopover. However, if it is not, is going to New Brunswick doable to be driven from New York? Is there a fastest route and one stop for overnight? Thank u so much for any suggestions.

ok, assuming by New York, you mean New York City? That is a good 10 hrs of straight driving time, to the US-Canadian border at Calais-Maine.

Fastest way is straight up Interstate 95, through Massachusetts, NH and into Maine, there are tolls in Maine. A great place to stop right on the border is in Calais Maine, at the Greystone B&B. http://www.greystonecalaisme.com/ . The reason I mention this great place is motels in Calais Maine are not of high quality. Read the reviews!

If you want to push on a little further into New Brunswick, there are towns like Saint John, Sussex or Moncton, that have lots of lodging choices. This would add to your initial drive, but would shorten your next day drive to Cape Breton.

Hope this helps! It is a lot of driving, no matter how you look at it. Remember when you cross into Canada in New Brunswick, the time will advance 1 hr to Atlantic time, from Eastern time zone. Good to keep in mind for reservations, etc.

St. Stephen New Brunswick to Baddeck in Cape Breton is another 8 hrs, again straight drive time. By straight drive time, I mean no stops for gas, meals, or bathroom breaks.

K.C. , Thank you for your response. I guess we will just stay in New Brunswick then. We have only 7 vacation days. We love culture and nature, is there a place in New Brunswick good to stay as our base? (husband and 21 yr old son). I have been researching and reading and do notice that visitors tends to move few times just being in New Brunswick.

Thanks again.

If you are going to stay in NB then why not make it easier on yourselves and stop off somewhere along the way - Portland or Bar Harbor for example. Then you would have the long drive broken up.

Look at the tourismnewbrunswick.ca website for lots of info.

St Andrews id a great place to stay (you are right people often stay in 2/3 locations) and Alma is good for Fundy Park and the Hopewell Rocks.

agree with keenvisitor.

If you want to break up the trip stay somewhere in coastal maine, although summer is high season and reservations may be tough to find, especially in Bar Harbor.

St. Andrews is a wonderful seaside community, and I think you would love it there. http://www.townofstandrews.ca/

As keenvisitor also pointed out, the Bay of Fundy is always popular with visitors. Alma http://www.fundyweb.com/fundy/alma.html or St. Martins http://www.stmartinscanada.com/ are two great destinations. The Salmon River B&B http://www.salmonriverbandb.com/ in St. Martins may be something that appeals to you.
