Picnic areas off hwy near St. John?

Wondering if anyone knows of any convenient picnic areas / playgrounds to stop at around the St. John area. Right off the highway is best, as we are just looking for a quick stop and to let the kids stretch while enroute to Maine. Thanks.

Like Nova Scotia, New Brunswick freeways don't come with rest stops and picnic parks. You have to find your own.

From east to west, here's a few of our favorites between the Nova Scotia line and the US border:

- Exit 500, Walker Road, north of Sackville. Once you're off the freeway, turn right on Walker Road and then turn left at Beech Hill Road. It leads into a sizable walking park, great for kids to burn off steam. It's within sight of the Route 2 freeway.

- Exit 450, Magnetic Hill and Magic Mountain, Moncton. A land of kiddie attractions, as well as shops that interest grown-ups. Just off exit. You've surely visited before.

- Exit 433, Salisbury. A popular ice cream stand and gas stations.

- Exit 198 Sussex (off Route 1) - A covered bridge. Turn right onto Route 114. Go east about 2 km, then turn left onto Plumweseeps Road. Just around the bend is the covered bridge.

- Exit 195 Sussex. Another covered bridge. Turn right on Route 890 North. The covered bridge is just ahead. This one is an actual picnic site, next to the old bridge.

- Exit 86 - New River Beach Provincial Park, near Lepreau, west of St. John, NB. You get off the freeway at Ex. 86 and follow the parallel old highway west, Route 175, to the park. When you're done, continue west on Route 175, which may bring a bit of déjà vu because this used to be the main highway to St. Stephen. You rejoin the freeway at Exit 69.

Happy travels!
