Should I take the Canadian route or cut through the states?

Hi Belleville!

The Canadian route will be the fastest, because it's 4-lane freeway almost all the way (except for about 80 km between Riviere du Loup, Quebec, and the New Brunswick line. Of course, one green sign on the freeway looks much like another, but this is a long drive and I'd be surprised if you wanted to follow by-ways through towns all the way along.

If you went by way of Sugarloaf and Skowhegan, Maine, you'd find some appealing scenery. Once you're east of Sherbrooke, Quebec, though, the autoroute ends and you'll be confronted with slower roads.

Be mindful too that United States authorities insist on a passport now to cross the border. (Being from Belleville you probably already know that, but for the benefit of others, border formalities may be one consideration in keeping you on your own side of the border.)

Happy travels!

One other thought: if you're carrying a lot of cargo, it's probably best to avoid crossing into the US and back into Canada. (It is allowed, but it can be hard for border officers to determine where things came from/are going.) So if e.g. the purpose of your trip is to drop a child off at university, the US route might only be advisable for the trip home.
