Saint John to Campobello

We're from Boston, and are interested in going to both Saint Johns and Campobello Island. We actually have two questions:

(1) Where else would should we go (we'll be in the area 3-5 days)? We're looking at Saint George and Saint Andrew. Other places we simply shouldn't miss? Would you recommend day trips from Saint John, or should we be thinking about staying the night in one or the other? We've been to Moncton and Fredricton, we're looking for something different.

(2) We LIKE ferries, so taking the ferries is part of the charm. Can you go on and off Deer Island by ferry in a day? (Letete to Deer Island, Deer Island to Campobello Island).

Thanks in advance for your insights.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi NJ!

Not only can you do the Fundy Isle ferries in a day, but in fact they're synchronized so that you could plan a continuous trip from the New Brunswick mainland to Lubec Maine, and complete it no more time that it would take to drive around by land.

St. Andrews is more charming than St. George. If you like this kind of by-gone era ambiance, have a look at the Algonquin Hotel in St. Andrews, built as a railroad hotel in the days before air conditioning, when well-to-do people from central Canada and the Eastern Seaboard came here to escape the heat (but could not afford to actually buy a place of their own).

Still, passing through St. George, it's worth stopping for a half-hour to walk around the falls and the dam, both in the heart of the town.

Deer Island is dotted with B&B and little private art galleries. It's the most charming, and worth tarrying on.

Grand Manan is the largest of the Fundy Isles. You can't do it as a continuous trip, like you can Deer Island and Campobello. You must retrace your course back to the mainland. Still, it's worth a visit if you have several days.

You'll enjoy your visit immensely more if you are lucky enough to pick days with a west or north wind. The Fundy Isles are exposed to Atlantic coastal fog in spring and early summer. When the wind is from the south or east, the fog blows in and stays all night and all morning, bringing with it showers, drizzle and a biting chill wind.

You could do all this in day trips from St. John, New Brunswick, but when we do it, we enjoy much more overnighting in the little places, rather than in the city. We're the sort who like to stay in a different place every night. If you commute, though, St. George and the ferries are only about a half-hour on the freeway from St. John. The ferries take around ten or fifteen minutes for each crossing.

Be mindful that the Deer Island to Campobello ferry is privately operated and only runs in the summer season, when there's enough traffic to make it feasible. Still, even if you had to drive all the way around Passamaquoddy Bay from Campobello to St. John, it would take only two hours.

Happy travels!
