A few questions.........

We are thinking of planning a trip to Newfoundland. We have never been there before.

When is the best time of year to go whale watching and from where? St. John's?

We are thinking of flying into Deer Lake spending a few days and then driving to St. John's (spending time in different areas on the way) and leaving from there.

Also can anyone tell me the closest hotels to the Deer Lake airport we would be coming in very late in the day?

To take your last question first. Probably your best bet would be to stay at the Deer Lake Motel located on the TCH and 2 kms from the airport. It is a standard motel with 56 rooms. Nothing special, but certainly good for your first night stay.

If you haven't already done so, I would advise requesting a copy of the Newfoundland & Labrador Travel Guide and Road Map. You can call 800/563-NFLD or order on line at www.newfoundlandandlabradortourism.com.

For whale watching in July & August, I have twice taken "Gatherall's Puffin & Whale Watch", located in the town of Bay Bulls which is 31 kms south of St. John's.

Hope this helps a bit. Please post any additional queries.

For whale watching the best month is July and one of the very best places is the Witless Bay reserve south of St. John's. The you will also see about a 'zillion' seabirds including oodles of puffins.

One neat thing about Newfoundland is that it is not uncommon to see whales from shore - but a boat trip can get you right out where they area and places like Witless Bay have a good success rate for sightings.
