10 Days - St. John's and Avalon Pen. - suggested itineraries

Looking at renting a car for a week and spending 3 days without in city. Wondering about logistics re getting to or from airport into city ie how/cost as cost to pick up at airport or in city same price.

Wonder if any suggestions re efficiency type oceanfront place - clean and affordable - maybe a weekly rental to use as base? Also wondering if day trips from St. John's area doable for seeing Avalon Peninsula as would like to loop around coastal routes.

You can do the Avalon as day trips from St. John's but one of the charms of Newfoundland is experiencing the smaller outport communities and I always suggest people spend a few nights in smaller towns /villages.

When are you visiting and what are your interests?

cheers

Visiting early May and interested in natural scenery, particularly coastline and people/culture. Staying in a smaller community holds appeal - do you have suggestion with oceanfront location?

Some of the highlights around the Avalon Peninsula are a a boat trip in the Bay Bulls area to see puffins and possibly icebergs and a little further along the coast to the beautiful red lighthouse at Ferryland. Ferryland is one of my favorite places and at some point in the summer, the lighthouse provides picnic lunches for people to eat on the rocks-a very lovely spot where sometimes, usually end of June and into July, you can sit on the rocks and watch the whales playing. Ferryland also has a dinner theatre at the road entrance to the small peninsula ending at the lighthouse, a lovely gift shop, the ongoing archeological dig of Lord Baltimore's settlement, a museum, a renovated stone church-all photo opportunities. You might want to check which places are open in early May. Be prepared for some cold weather. Further along the peninsula you might see caribou and at the community of Branch there is a good B&B on the water called Cliffhouse.

If you travel the peninsula, try to visit Cape St Mary to walk the cliffs and see and listen to the gannets. This whole Avalon peninsula is worth driving around and possibly staying somewhere a night or two. It's all about the weather, too! Hope you enjoy your trip!

While in St. John's, take a drive out to see Cape Spear-the scenery and the lighthouse are worth a visit.

Thank you for the suggestions. Trip is falling into place. Will spend first 3 nights in St. John's and explore city on foot, then pick up rental car and have reserved 6 nights with oceanfront location in efficiency at Witless Bay and will take day trips from there as weather permits. I would rather see one area indepth and will leave other areas for exploration to other trips.

Realize many things not open and weather may be cold but more interested in natural coastal scenery and do hear puffins there now and doesn't appear from iceberg site that they are or will be in area. I'll post trip report here when I return from visit.
