Planning trip to NL ... Need Your Input

We are planning a week long trip to NL, probably the last week of June. We have seen pictures from the NL tourism website and really we are amazed how beautiful the place is. We want to see nice scenery, icebergs!! and all other beautiful places.

Please help us on how we should plan our trip. I assumed we will need to rent a car to travel along the shoreline.

Thanks!

Hi ahson ~

My vote would be to spend 2-3 days in St. John's to see the city, especially the rooms, and a walking tour around town and to get down to Bay Bulls/Witless Bay.

Then drive the ~4 hours up to Bonavista, Elliston, Port Union and Trinity. Enough up there to keep you going for a 2 night stay.

You would be able to then drive the ~5 hours up to the Twillingate. Here you will find icebergs and the very interesting Prime Berth Fishing Museum, complete with demos of the work done at a stage. 2 nights here. Or you could try to get it in with 1 night.

Then drive the ~5.5 hours back to St. John's for the night before your departure. Just a week's time is really tough to see the good stuff in NL.

A car is essential. Have you booked car hire yet? If not do it NOW. There are only a limited number of cars available on the island.

Are you still planning on flying in and out of St John's as you said in a similar post back in February?

Are you wanting to base yourself in one place for several nights or move on each day?

Did you order a copy of the brochure and map produced by Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism as advised back in February and have you looked at the information on driving routes in the brochure and on the web? There are lots of different ideas here once you have decided where to stay.

It is now the first week of June and you are planning for the last week of June? If you don't have a rental car booked by now you MAY be out of luck. Cars are in limited supply and without a reservation you aren't likely to get one. Start calling NOW.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The only problem right now is I can't find any car rental company that offers unlimited mileage. With the additional mileage charge, the car expense could go up to almost $500-$700 for a week

You have discovered "the law of a finite number of rental cars" on NL.

Do you have a question of the forum at this point?

There is no unlimited mileage here. Sorry.

The rentals usually offer about 2-300 km and then 15-18 cents per km after that ,I know it sucks....

I was able to get a rental car through Enterprise in St. John's with unlimited mileage for mid June but booked three weeks ago.

Unlimited mileage is a very RARE thing in NL. 150 kms per day free is about the norm. Anything over that you will usually have to pay for.

You MAY have better luck with car rental agencies not at the airport, some people have.
