Nov 9 plan to go to yellowknife for aurora ~

Hi All:

My sister is planning to come to visit me in Beg of November from Asia. We talked about the best year for aurora this year and would like to plan to visit yellowknife on Nov 9 for 4 days 3 nites but according to some research seems like the weather may not be good for aurora viewing due to mostly cloudy.

Can someone who lives around NT, AB can give me some advice. Since my sister does not have longer stay and just can be here for a week from Nov 7 only.

Thanks in advance.

It might not be the BEST time of year but the nights are long enough at that time of year to see the Aurora. The weather is always unpredictable this far ahead. If that's the only time you have. Give it a try.

Hi thank you for your advice and I think I will keep observe the weather at Yellowknife for now and keep my fingers cross, by the way if I planned to drive by myself, I know that the Ingramtrail is the place to go and can go to Prelude Lake etc do you have any other good spot to watch the northern light?

Thanks again

My own experience is limited. I visited Yellowknife twice in winter and mainly got around on foot (with some serious pac boots on my feet).

Anyway, I think that downtown close to Franklin Ave the light pollution can be strong enough to drown out light to moderate activity. Some possibilities for putting most of the light pollution to one side:

From the Coast Fraser Tower a fairly close spot would be the trail up Tin Can Hill to the southeast of the hotel.

From hotels close to the east end of Franklin Ave, maybe the park on School Draw Rd where the ice road would open in winter.

From the Explorer Hotel, maybe the trail around Niven Lake north of the hotel.

From Capital Suites, maybe the trail around Frame lake by the end of Matonabee St.

None of these is ideal, but they could be okay. In January and February it is possible to walk out on the ice, but I would expect any ice to be dangerously thin in early November.
