Camping Cape Breton

Hello,

My husband and I are heading to NS next weekend. We have 6 nights set aside for Cape Breton Island. We want to spend our days hiking and relaxing and we are planning to camp. Right now, we are thinking 2 nights at Broad Cove Park, 2 nights at Meat Cove Campground, 2 nights at Cheticamp Park, but I have not booked anything yet. I have a few questions:

- Do I need to book sites in advance?

- Have we choosen good overnight locations for seeing and hiking the Cabot Trail

- Are we best with provincial parks, or should we try private campgrounds? We do want to be able to go out for dinners, are the parks isolated?

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Broad Cove Park is fairly close to Ingonish where there are restaurants.

Meat Cove is very isolated but there seems to be at least one restaurant (at the campground). I am not sure you would want two nights there but it depends upon the trails you wish to hike.

Cheticamp is on the lovely scenic west coast and there are quite a few restaurants, whale watching and hiking within reach.

There is camping in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park close to Cheticamp. novascotia.com/places-to-stay/…35

As to whether you should stay in Provincial and national park campgrounds or private ones depends upon your tastes. The private ones generally have more facilities but the public ones generally have lovely sites and larger lots.

Thank you very much for your detailed advice. I think we are going to stay in the provincial parks. Thank you also for the links for hiking. Looks like I have my reading picked out for tonight :)

meat cove...i considered camping there but ended up just going to see it. i was glad i didn't stay there. it is a beautiful view but not a very pleasant looking camping area and a lot of people just looking (no privacy) . i don't recall any restaurants but i was there several years ago.
