What are the best things to see/do in Halifax?

We are traveling by cruise ship to Halifax in September. What do you recommend seeing/doing? Peggy's Cove, Wolfville, or just touring the city of Halifax? Should we hire a taxi? Is there a way to sight see without using the cruise ship excursions?

It kind of depends on your interests....I'd look at the things to do list in Halifax and see what interests you....there's great museums, food, titanic stuff in Halifax, but Peggy's cove is great but some would find boring...

If you look at the top right of this page you will see information for cruise ship passengers.

I also urge you to go here where you will get lots more information: boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=39

You can do a search on that page (look to the right of the blue bar near the top where it says "Search this Forum."

You certainly do not need to take a ship's excursion.

Here are some options:

1. Stay in the waterfront and downtown area where this is lots to see. Be sure to visit the Maritime Museum which includes artifacts from the Titanic among other things. I also recommend the Harbour Hopper Tour. (Google is your friend.) Many people do this and only pay for museums, food and shopping. There is a wonderful walkable waterfront area.

2. Rent a car and see Peggy's Cove, possibly stopping for lobster at Ryers on the way back. This can be a half day trip OR you can go a bit further and visit scenic places such as Lunenburg and Mahone Bay. If you put those places into the Cruise Critic search engine, you will find lots of information.

3. Rent a car and see wineries and scenery in the Wolfville area. OR go tidal bore rafting if the tides are right.

4. Instead of renting a car you can prearrange a car or van and driver. You can also hire taxis at the dock but you are taking a chance doing that. Your best bet if there are just two of you and would like to save money is to find the Roll Call for your particular cruise on Cruise Critic and see if you can join others. boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=34

You will find many, many posts and reviews on Cruise Critic so that is the place to go. It is affiliated with Trip Advisor by the way.
