We are Aussies going to Toronto prior to cruising

Is three days on Toronto too long? In our fifties and reasonably fit, please advise what we may do. We love architecture, and shopping!

Also, where should we stay in Niagara area..we hate touristy areas, is St. Catherine's a better bet?

Thank You

Hi Pansypicklepuss;

Toronto is Canada’s largest city, 4th largest in North America after Mexico City, New York, & Los Angeles. You could spend an entire week in Toronto and still have plenty to see and do !

I'm rather confused by your post. In another, you say you are spending 13 days in Toronto and Southern Ontario, before leaving from Montreal. Here you say you are in Toronto for 3 days before going on a cruise. Which is it?

Three days in Toronto is sufficient, although as noted you could certainly fill more time. Take a look at the Top Questions and Things to do section for ideas. There are numerous walking tours available for architecture. And lots of shopping - both mainstream mall type and the more interesting indie shops.

In the Niagara region I'd be more inclined to stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake, or in towns like Jordan or Port Dalhousie. These are in wine country.

Note the above link also includes info on other wine regions in Ontario such as Prince Edward County (east of Toronto), and Lake Erie area. Which are areas you might like to explore as per your other post.

London is an interesting choice. What is calling you to London?

I'm not sure what gardens will still be around in October, but you may be here when the fall colours are peaking. You can look at the Ontario Parks website when you arrive to see where the best places to view the colours are:

Other areas you may want to look into are Kingston, Westport, Perth, Merrickville, the Rideau Canal Waterway, and Ottawa. Kingston was Canada's capital before it was moved to Ottawa and has some nice architecture and an old fort downtown. Westport, Merrickville, and Perth are villages/small towns located along the Rideau waterway that have specialty shops and some hisory.

Hi Pansypicklepuss;

About 165 miles / 265 km, a 3 hour drive east of Toronto, are the towns of Kingston and Gananoque.

In the town of Kingston, you won't want to miss Fort Henry, which has been designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization. (UNESCO)

The original Fort Henry was built during the War of 1812, between Canada and the United States.

Just 18 miles / 28 km east of Kingston is Gananoque (pronounced GAN-AN-OCK-WAY), the "Gateway to the Thousand Islands". You can take a 1 hr, 2.5 hr, or 5 hr boat tour of the 1000 Islands.

The 5 hour tour stops at Boldt Castle, which was built in 1900 by the former owner of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. If you wish to walk about the island and tour through the castle, you will need to clear U.S. Customs, as the island is in American waters. Be sure that you bring your identification as required.

While in Gananoque, check out;

The Thousand Islands Playhouse for great live theatre.

If you decide to stay in Gananoque overnight, I strongly recommend the Islandview Inn Bed & Breakfast, which is located only 1 block from where the tour boats dock, and the St Lawrence River.

The Holiday Inn Express would be my second choice, but is located at the opposite end of town.

Having two posts going at once is getting confusing.

The cruises of the St. Lawrence are nice but service will be very limited in October. I think the only regular cruise that Gan Boat Lines will have while you are in Canada will be the 5 hour Boldt Castle cruise on Thanksgiving weekend; October 12th, 13th, and the holiday Monday (when many places will be closed).
