14 day round trip Toronto-Toronto in hire car

we will be flying into Toronto from NY around 7 June 2014, picking up hire car driving to Niagara Falls to explore there, not sure if we need 1 or 2 days there and then heading off in an unknown direction. We would love to see some spectacular scenery, do some short walks, travel through some farming districts, see some historic sites/buildings but not greatly interested in museums, library's etc. I have read forum on Lake Huron circle, this sounds good, but I'm open to suggestions please.

OK ... so are you not doing the Quebec trip then?

tripadvisor.ca/…57166924

You've still not said whether you plan to spend any days in Toronto itself ... as Canada's largest, most cosmopolitan, diverse city, it deserves a few days.

If you drive east or west from Toronto you will be primarily in rolling farmland areas, with numerous historic towns, winery and foodie regions, that also have theatre and festivals.

If you drive north you will be in cottage country - lakes, beaches, hiking areas.

Have you looked at the main Ontario tourism website? It provides maps and highlights of the various regions in the province. A good planning tool.

Here are a few possibilities:

http://goo.gl/maps/1JIaM

http://goo.gl/maps/GKgva

If any of these appeal, then you can drill down to do more research on secondary routes, towns, attractions within the areas. There are lots of things to do and see, but you need to make some genral decisions about where you want to go, how long to spend in each area, etc. Then we can provide you with more specific info.

I'll link you to a couple of answers I've given on similar questions in the past if that's ok:

tripadvisor.ca/…56697534 (you'd change this suggested route of course to start/end in Toronto and not go through Sarnia)

For spectacular scenery, you should consider the shield country about 1.5 hours north of Toronto. This is the more rugged, rocky, forested are with lots of lakes. Southern Ontario is more flatter farming country.

These are shown on some of the above posts which include Parry Sound, Sudbury and Algonquin Park.

Wow, thank you phpr. I am open to suggestions and yes the Quebec trip didn't sound that exciting, so opting for plan b now. If you suggest we should spend some time in Toronto then we will, I had planed to have the night there when we land and the night before our departure, as nothing is booked only air flights and car hire we are completely open to suggestions. I will check out all you have tagged. I have looked at some of those links and this all lead to me not knowing what to do, but now I possibly do have a bit more of an idea of what is out there, you have been very helpful.

Oh so much information, thank you.

OK this is what I have come up with. Arrive Toronto, drive to Hamilton and 2 nights there and visit Niagara Falls one day. We will then head out to Barrie (your map http://goo.gl/maps/GKgva), Parry Sound. I think I would like to visit Muskoke Lakes District as well, up to Greater Sudbury, to Manitoulin Island and catch Chi-Chi-Maun ferry to Tobermory then head to Toronto for two days prior to our departure. Travel approx 1700-2000k's is alright as we plan to possibly only have one night in each location depending on time spent at attractions, walking, site seeing etc. How does this sould, I'm getting excited as I now have something to work with. Thanks you.

I'd do some tweaking on this, based on some of the interests you noted.

I wouldn't stay in Hamilton - head to either Niagara Falls, or consider staying in Niagara-on-the-Lake - nearby pretty, historic community with shops, live theatre (Shaw Festival), and wineries. You can do that at the beginning or the end of the trip.

In Muskoka, I'd base myself for a couple of days more to the centre of the area - Bracebridge or Gravenhurst. These are lively, busy, towns with lovely settings. IMO Parry Sound is a good spot to set off from for a boat cruise of the 30,000 Islands, but the town itself is nothing special. Did you not want to visit Algonquin Park? You've not mentioned if you've an interest in hiking or canoeing, wildlife, etc.

Sudbury is not particularly scenic, however if you have an interest in the mining history of Ontario, the tours of the mines, and the Science North complex are special.

Coming south from Tobermory, you might consider heading a bit west to the Kitcchen-Waterloo, and Stratford area - again some interesting communities - steeped in farming history, with theatre and pretty communities.

So ... your route might look something like this ... ignoring the part where you drive around the southern base of Georgian Bay, as the map does not show the ferry from Manitoulin to Tobermory.

Ahh...yes, but then you have to deal with "auto-correct" which can be just as bad.
