Restaurants & Shopping Queries

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend A) Good Restaurants in Kingston Town , - We like most foods so not too fussy.

We're staying in the Radisson Hotel.

Also what good stores for shopping for A) Souvenirs & Clothes .

Plus any advise in order to get most out of a 2 day visit would be most welcome.

Thanks so much.

Hi IrishLadyIrl,

There are great restaurants along King and Princess Streets. The Lone Star is very popular, as is the Wooden Hands Gourmet Pizza. For fancier fare, The King Street Sizzle is good in the Four Points Sheraton Hotel. Casual Pub Fare can be found at a lot of spots, check out Toucans / Fitzpaticks for a decent Irish Pub. There are also some small plates places that have sprung up in recent years one is across from The Lone Star (Aroma ?) and another one is called Tango. Check out Pan Chancho for a quick bite, takeout or picnic.

As for things to do:

The 1000 Islands - Gananoque is 30 minutes away by cab.

Old Fort Henry

Bellevue House - Former Residence of Canada`s first prime minister gives you a peak into his public life and the grief that he had in his personal life.

Wolfe Island

Walk around Downtown

Take the Nightly Ghost Walk

Visit the Military College Museum

Visit the Canadian Penitentary Museum

Cheers!

Hi;

The town of Gananoque (pronounced GAN-AN-OCK-WAY), is known as the "Gateway to the Thousand Islands". From there you can take a boat tour of the 1000 Islands.

www.ganboatline.com/

They offer 1 hr, 3 hr, and 5 hr tours. The 5 hour tour stops at Boldt Castle, which was built in 1900 by the former owner of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. If you wish to walk about the island and tour through the castle, you will need to clear U.S. Customs, as the island is in American waters. Be sure that you bring your identification as required.

If you decide to stay in Gananoque overnight, I strongly recommend the Islandview Inn Bed & Breakfast, which is located only 1 block from where the tour boats dock, and the St Lawrence River.

Thank you both Guys - really appreciate the advise.

Are there are stores worth visiting to pick up a few nice souvenirs or clothes bargains ? or just nice general stores for general things that you know of ?

Is Kingston a fairly easy place to walk around from our Htl (Radisson)

Again thanks so much .

Radisson has an upscale restaurant onsite with great harbour views.

You asked about souvenirs. There's a S&R discount department store. Long-established, local place. It's just a few blocks from Radisson. I suspect you'll find Canadian souvenirs there.

You'll find it easy to walk around the downtown core from your hotel - which is right on the waterfront. Be sure to go to the outdoor market behind city hall cityofkingston.ca/cityhall/press/release.asp…

Hi IrishLadyIrl,

Kingston downtown is fairly compact. You will be staying in the harbour area just off Ontario Street. There are restaurants along Ontario (both ways from your hotel). One block up and parallel to Ontario is King... there are more restaurants there. The Keg is always a good bet if you are in the mood for a steak dinner. Princess Street is the main area for downtown shopping (there are big box stores, etc in the burbs, I suppose if you wanted to go there you could inquire about the bus or take a taxi).

Princess Street has some great shops. As someone mentioned S&R is an old time department store, you should find all kinds of odds and ends in there. If you haven't done so already on this trip... make a point of checking out the ROOTS store (229 Princess), great for a wearable kind of non-souvenirish souvenir. (Roots is the company who has outfitted Cdn Olympic Athletes in the past, and their designs have been the most traded for at the games).

And remember to take time out for a pint at the Toucan / Kirkpatricks (76 Princess) and a wee bit of home.

:-)

Cheers!
